ASV????

Post by ignorantone » Fri May 31, 2013 11:52 am

Hi all!

I had a pap nap Tuesday and new sleep study last night. The tech mentioned that he saw something in my pap nap that indicates the use of the ASV method. What is that? This is my 4th sleep study due to non-compliance and issues with leaking masks. Since my first study a few years ago, there has been an increase in centrals. Can anyone tell me more about ASV from experience and what the tech might have seen?

ASV stands for Adaptive Servo-Ventilation ... it is an xPAP therapy that helps tackle central sleep apnea. It does this by helping to support your respiration when you stop breathing. By doing this, it helps break the undershoot / overshoot cycle that contributes to central apneas. I'll post more later.

You answered your own question: they saw centrals.

It might also help with compliance, but insurance usually only covers ASV ($$$) if there are centrals.

Mask fit will still be an issue with ASV, but I find it a lot less uncomfortable than trying to exhale against high pressure.
