How to disinfect a cpap machine?

Post by danielqk » Tue May 07, 2013 1:42 pm

A liquid such as Controll can be used to sanitize hard surface. But what about inside the machine
and how to sanitize the blower? Hospital facilities have ozone generators, a huge machine using
high electrical current to change air with O2 to pure O3 gas. For home use, if we can not access to ozone
so how to disinfect a cpap machine?

I have used an ozone based car air purifier (powered with a 12vdc adapter and clip leads). I put both in a large plastic container running for an hour or two and then run the machine in the open air for an hour or two to get most of the ozone out of the machine before use.

However, I am not sure that the current "kill them all" philosophy is a good direction so I am now considering how I might create a little healthy microbiome in there. Probably the mix needs more bacteria - but - what kind and how can they live (probably on the mold).

Have a great week!

there is a new cpap specific ozone cleaner box called "SoClean" - I think it is total overkill, but here is a link to a video on it - - think it is between 200 and 300 bucks so very expensive for something you really don't need

It may overkill but when buying a used cpap machine, it need to be sanitized in and out with ozone to make sure no infectious diseases will transfer to new user.

X 2.

Totally unnecessary. But, if it WERE (for whatever reason), I would suggest getting a different machine. I've been told that the blowers run at something like 20,000 rpms and there would be virtually no way for anything to remain inside.
Just make sure there are new, clean filters in it and you're good to go.

I've acquired a number of "used" machines over the years......a couple with quite a few hours on them (and possibly from hospital environments).......and the thought of needing to disinfect them hasn't even entered my mind.

The truth is that filters are not perfect and that even if they were there are things such as mold spores which are under two microns. The truth is that it does build up inside. The truth is that over time things do grow in there. The truth is that the smell of mold was replaced by the fresh smell of ozone after treatment.

Now that the "truth" has been told, I guess everyone else should just shut up.

Like I said, if it were remotely possible for there to be anything harmful inside the machine.......get a different friggin' machine!

What are you trying to kill? If it's your germs, they are part of you, there's no escape, your body will fight them off. If it's someone elses used XPAP, do as suggested in previous posts or buy new and hope typhoid mary in china didn't sneeze in it! Odd's are there's not anymore danger that going out in public, they are out there! Jim

Does anyone know if they disinfect the machines in a sleep lab?

Speaking of fumes.......

Here's some excerpts from the EPA website about ozone.

How is Ozone Harmful?

The same chemical properties that allow high concentrations of ozone to react with organic material outside the body give it the ability to react with similar organic material that makes up the body, and potentially cause harmful health consequences. When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs (see - "Ozone and Your Health"). Relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and, throat irritation. Ozone may also worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and compromise the ability of the body to fight respiratory infections. People vary widely in their susceptibility to ozone. Healthy people, as well as those with respiratory difficulty, can experience breathing problems when exposed to ozone. Exercise during exposure to ozone causes a greater amount of ozone to be inhaled, and increases the risk of harmful respiratory effects. Recovery from the harmful effects can occur following short-term exposure to low levels of ozone, but health effects may become more damaging and recovery less certain at higher levels or from longer exposures (US EPA, 1996a, 1996b).

You can take it apart and clean all its bits. The problem is things like the ResMed are snap together so you can't do that without breaking them. So get one with screws.

Many of these machines have foam rubber parts for noise control and there is no way to clean that... even with ozone. You need to replace it but you can't buy the parts.

I've been using the SoClean sanitizer for over a year now, and am very happy with it. With my history of sinus/respiratory issues I'm not willing to take any chances with the cleanness of my equipment. What I like about it is that it's very easy to deal with. It feeds ozone through the reservoir, tubing and mask, yet keeps it contained. Neither me nor the outside environment are ever exposed to the potentially harmful effects of ozone.

I suppose it all comes down to what you are comfortable with. Some of us don't do much cleaning, while others will scrub and disinfect to the nth degree. As long as the user of the equipment is happy thats all that matters
