Will one manufacturer mask fit another manufacturer machine?

Post by JamesCPAP » Mon May 01, 2006 3:32 am

Have a ResMed Mirage Full Face Mask from the hospital and have also been given a Respironics Comfort Gel mask, yet I've noticed that although the ResMed Mirage mask fits the tubing of the trial Brears PV10 tube that I have, the Respironics Comfort Gel does not.

At closer look, the right angled inhalation tube/port on the mask, the diameter on the Respironcs is 23mm in diameter yet the ResMed Mirage is 20mm so I can't use the Respironcs Comfort Gel mask on the Brears PV10 currently.

Are masks interchangable between machines usually ? Are there any adaptors I could get to get the Respironics Comfort Gel to work ?

Or is it a deliberate ploy from manufacturers to try and get you to buy their own masks, even though a ResMed mask will work on a Brears ?

They should fit. It might be that the ComfortGel mask is incomplete.

I'm told the mask is complete, but that was my first thought because I don't see anyone in the forums here talking about adaptors or incompatibility of masks.

I'm holding a ResMed Ultra Mirage FF mask, unopened except for a small cut in the plastic bag which I just made, big enough to measure the "swivel", which is attached to the "elbow" by a small plastic "clip". The swivel measures 21.9 mm (0.862") diameter at the small end, and tapers to 22.3 mm (0.880") nearest where it attaches to the elbow. The flexible tubing which I just received from cpap.com (just days ago) measures almost exactly 20 mm inside diameter (0.787"), unstressed, which is just about perfect for the flexible end of the hose to squeeze over the rigid plastic tapered adapter about 2 mm larger and stay tightly connected. The swivel, when I detach it measures about 32.7 mm (1.288") in length, just so you know exactly which part I am referring to. (There should be a "users guide" that came with the mask to identify the parts exactly.)

Given that, it should be a perfect fit, the ResMed UMFF mask and a "standard?" hose.

Hope that helps.

If you have the Full shipped mask it should fit. I have another type Respironics ComfortFull "M", 1004872, On the 90 degree swivel it has a detachable quick disconnect that fits on the hose and then is retained on the mask by two clips made onto the elbow. The part that goes into the hose is gray plastic and the part it goes over is clear plastic. Jim

I'm not sure if your model is the same, check the masks parts list, they may have short sheeted you, at the Evil DME's.

Thanks, you're right. I've just found an image of the ComfortGel. I'm missing the bottom part of the inhalation port on the mask which plugs inside the elbow joint, and that's why it won't fit the tubing
