CPAP newbie- air flow bothering spouse

Post by gholloway » Thu Apr 25, 2013 11:21 am

I just started on the CPAP three nights ago for severe snoring. I did the sleep study because my husband cannot sleep through my noise and also found out that my sleep is also very poor. I knew I was exhausted but never knew it could be from my snoring. I have no apnea but pulmonologist and sleep center felt I would benefit from the CPAP. First two nights didn't go well as trying to get the pillow mask to fit well did not work with the ear only straps. Last night I tried the head gear and feel a bit more alert.
Problem I am now having is that the air escape is blowing on my husband because i am a side sleeper. Any suggestions on how to make this less disturbing to his sleep?

Use a bed blanket or pillow as a barrier so the air vent doesn't bother the hubby.

I find that using a hose hanger device redirects the airflow in a more desirable direction; especially for this mask.

If you tend to sleep on only one side, sleep on the other side so it's blowing away from him or switch sides of the bed.

If you roll from side to side, a pillow barrier between you might work.

You can consider hanging your hose overhead with a hose management system. If you have a nasal pillow like the Swift, it will redirect the airflow up and out instead of down and toward your spouse.

Maybe try a mask that has a filter in it. Softens the sound. Examples are the fisher and paykel eson and fisher and paykel zest Q. These are very quiet.

Turn on to the your other side.or if you can't...have your husband turn over. If this is a problem for both of you...switch sides of the bed.

There are some good suggestions here to solve your problem. I'm thinking, he'll eventually get used to it. Be sure to work all your other issues here too.

I'm gonna try some of these suggestions too. I am finding that this is a dance of compromise. I always used to fall asleep on my husbands shoulder but now I can't lay like that b/c of the air blowing on him. I miss that.

Had that same issue with my husband when I first went on the hose. I told him if he will quit snoring in my face & ear, I'll quit blowing air at him. He never complained again. One of these days we'll be able to get his sleep study done.

I don't really have a solution, I try not to fall asleep with the vent towards my husband (who is cold-natured) but he says it happens when I am asleep. He usually tries to adjust out of the flow of the vent but sometimes gives up and goes to the couch. He says that once he was awakened by a serious leak I had and he kind of pulled the pillows away from my face a little at which point I (without awakening) reached up and adjusted the pillows to stop the leak (skills huh?). He now wears the CPAP but the difference is that I am hot-natured so when I feel the jet on me, I really kind of enjoy it.
