Anyone want some Provents?

Post by lindalrc » Wed Apr 24, 2013 6:30 pm

My husband and I each got a box of Provents to take traveling. Tried them out beforehand and did not like them at all because you feel so limited when inhaling that you can not fall asleep. Since we are both long acclimated to our machines, we said, "Forget it!" So now we have two boxes, almost full, that need a home. If anyone is interested, send a reply to this posting and I'll mail them out - no charge. I hate to just trash them if someone can use them.

I would love to try those when my electric goes off. I live in a rural area and it happens pretty often. Do you think this would help?

I would love to try them. They might be the answer to how I can go on an overnight bus trip with my sons band next spring!

Keep in mind the manufacturer of Provent has filed for bankruptcy and is hoping for acquisition by another company, but I haven't heard if they will be acquired.

Well, if I can use it, I will just save it until spring. I don't want to use it full time

Anyone wanting to give these things a try...experiment ahead of time with fitting and trying..don't wait till you have to use it in the next 30 minutes.
It is not easy to adjust to. I tried fitting one just for grins once. It isn't easy to get them to stick just right and be sure to go find the instructions on how to fit and use them. They may be on that link I provided.
So getting them to stick just right takes some practice and using them takes even more practice.

Is there any evidence they work?

Yes. There is some evidence that they work. Several discussions about them on the forum if you want to search for "Provent" threads.

Short version...for about 50% of the people they will reduce the OSA severity by about 50% to 60%.
So you would have a 50% chance of maybe getting your OSA number of events cut in half.

So not the greatest of odds but for some people it works. I was going to offer it as one of your "options" in your situation because 50 to 60 reduction might work okay for your situation...and your desats weren't horribly bad.

I tried one just to see what if felt like...it wasn't pleasant. Exhaling through the nose is what you have to do to make it work and you can't mouth breathe and it feels like trying to exhale through a pin hole (which is just about the size of the opening)...inhaling is easy but the resistance upon exhale is difficult. Not impossible to master but it takes practice to get used to it. It isn't easy and it doesn't always produce desired results. If it did we wouldn't have such an active forum here about adjusting to cpap machines and masks.

Definitely better than no therapy but Provent itself is not a cake walk.
In my case even if I was lucky enough to be one of the 50% that it would reduce my events...
My number of events are too large and O2 desats too low that it would still leave me worse than where you are now.
So not a viable option for me even if I could master exhaling through a pin hole and at the same time keep my mouth shut.

The Provents are on their respective ways to two new homes (one for each box). They were an experiment for us and not a successful one. My thought in making the offer was simply if someone wanted to try them without much hassle to make their own decision.

It wasn't and I am the queen of liking to experiment and trying out new things to see if they would work.

There's a reason why OP in this thread was giving them away.

Aww shoot, I would have like to try them out too. I was looking into them for some upcoming overnight flights.
That'll teach me to not skip a day logging in.
