Pretty in Pink has arrived!

Post by gasp » Thu Apr 18, 2013 11:14 am

I got my new machine and she's a beauty! She's a lot quieter than the Respironics M Series AFLEX was and the exhalation relief is even better!

One potential problem. I don't think the humidification chamber is warming.

I ordered a ClimateLine hose but didn't hook it up and wasn't going to until winter. I hooked up a SlimLine. All I get is cool air. The light is blue when the unit is supposedly cool and orange when supposedly warm. The unit blows gentle air to 'cool down'. All that appears to be working.

Steps taken:
- I touched the warming plate in the morning and it is cold.
- I disconnected and reconnected the chamber to the main unit.
- I set the humidification up to 4 and still the air is really cool. The plate is still cold in the morning.
- I called CPAP.com. They suggested I set the unit to 6 (maximum) and hook up the ClimateLine and see if it warms then. I'll use it tonight and see if the unit warms.

I still want the unit to warm using a regular hose - but I did as told as a troubleshooting step. Any thoughts?

Turn the humidifier up to 6.
Use the machine for about 15 minutes while awake. Stop and check the warming plate to see if it is warm after 15 minutes.
Heat only setting (that's what you get without the Climateline attached) comes and goes. It cycles. You may be testing it in the AM at the end of a cycle or something.
I am not sure but in the heat only setting it may work like the new PR S1 50 series machines do ...which is they also monitor ambient room humidity and apply heat based on ambient humidity. If the air in the bedroom already has a decent amount of humidity it may not warm up enough for you to notice the difference because it doesn't sense the need.
The 50 series machines use very little water and heat and with mine...even at a setting of 5 the air was much too cool for comfort...During winter I got "ice cube nose".

Are you using a Resmed s9? If you are there is a warm up mode you can use to pre-heat the water a bit and it should give you a little bit warmer air. you hold down the round button for 3 seconds to start it.

K, will do. Will wear the mask because I don't want a huge blip of data showing big leak LOL

I thought I'd save wear and tear on the ClimateLine if I only used it in the winter. But if I like the percentage delivery of humidification (and given it even works : ) then I may use it year round.

If it's testing ambient humidity levels in the room then it's probably confused and thinks it's on Mars or something as I live in Arizona. One of the reasons I need humidity so badly.

Thanks for asking which machine I'm using. I changed my profile (forgot to do that prior).

Very nice! Tonight I'll try the ClimateLine and see if that works. If when I wake up in the middle of the night for a restroom break the chamber is still cold to the touch I'll try holding down the button to see if it even warms.

By the way, it is using water but slowly. I can go three nights on a tank. Is that normal? My Respironics M Series AFLEX had to have more water every night.

Well it's unlikely you are already in a humid environment in Arizona and I don't know for sure that it was doing that anyway. The PR S1 50 series do along with the 60 series if their heated hose isn't attached but I don't know what the S9 does without the ClimateLine in terms of analyzing ambient humidity to possibly affect the heating portion of the unit. It may do nothing just like your old machine other than supply X amount of heat every so often.

I do know that heat only won't warm the air coming to your nose to any great extent at all. I was mainly trying to figure out if the plate was even heating and I know that they do cycle in and out.

See what the 15 minute heating experiment shows and go from there.

On this humidifier, I can feel the cabinet on the outside right end; and it feels warm to the touch.
No need to remove the tank.

Pugsy, the 15 minutes test showed a heated chamber - woo hoo! Chunkyfrog, your quick touch the side trick also shows sometimes it's warm and sometimes it's not - which would show it may indeed by cycling as Pugsy spoke to.

I tried the ClimateLine and it sends a nice humidity level. I think I'll stick with using the ClimateLine.

Thanks for your help!

I got my machine a year ago April 30th. I have been using the same climateline hose all this time. I did get a new one a few months ago, but it is still sealed in its bag. I wanted a backup and didn't see any reason to quit using the first one.

just for reference: On my S9 with the climateline and running it in auto at 82 degrees the machine will go through an entire tub of water in 8 hours. I live in the Denver area at 5730 feet and it is a dry climate - I would suspect a similar humidity (or lack thereof) level as Arizona.

I also tend to use my supplies such as chambers and hoses longer than the recommended time. I'm uncertain if the recommended replacement time is to limit their liability (hoses with holes, splits, etc., resulting in bad therapy) or to make money.

I also wonder if the plastic degrades/breaks down over time and could present health issues. We are talking about years and years of us being exposed. If only one of us could hook up our hose to a machine that could do a microscopic breakdown of what is in the air being delivered.

PS I have slept so well - a dramatic improvement over the sleep I received on the Respironics M Series AFLEX that I felt relaxed around reading my reports. I waited 30 days to collect sufficient data. So weird. I used to read my reports daily, then weekly, then monthly at the least.

My reports show a consistent lower AHI but on the puzzling side show centrals. I will post a report for help and have posted a new thread asking for help with how to create a customizable report with a date range and the correct data for assessment.

Woot! So glad I'm sleeping so well! Pretty in Pink was well worth the money.
