Wrist Bracelet or Neck chain pendant

Post by ringo728 » Sat Apr 13, 2013 8:32 pm

I was given an information packet after my sleep study and after being diagnosed with sleep apnea. It was indicated that I should either have and ID card (which was furnished) or a wrist bracelet or a pendant for a neck chain indicating that I have sleep apnea if I should become unconscious because of an accident or another health trauma. Is there a source for these type of products?

Google "Medical Alert Bracelet for Sleep Apnea" and you will find lots of choices...cheap to expensive.

I don't have one so can't comment on quality.

I've been a Medicalert subscriber since 2003 due to other health issues. I've always worn the pendant because I like the fact that it is a little more discreet than a bracelet. I've had the same pendant since '03 and haven't had to replace it. The link is below:

There is now a silicone bracelet that holds a USB with your medical record.
I like the pendant idea, though.

I have a Medic Alert bracelet also. I have artificial joints and must have antibiotics right away in case of injury. If I am unconscious and unable to tell them, my Medic Alert bracelet tells them.

I added sleep apnea to the list of conditions on the bracelet.

The wallet card that comes with it lists conditions, medication and cpap settings.

First I bought a Wrist Bracelet which needed to be engraved. Then I found it cost like a dollar a letter, with my name, all my medical conditions, my doc's clinic and then I was running out of room. and I did not have over seventy dollars for a bracelet for which the information will change in the next year.

I did get a bracelet from CVS which has an area to put a piece of folded paper. Wrote on it in water proof ink. then the ring which secures the links to the medic alert came apart in the first week. Jeweler advises that none of the rings jewelers usually have are as strong as the stainless steel ring which does not quite close down. That stainless steel ring can not be soldered - welded with what they have. I asked the jeweler to cannibalize a ring off the bracelet for engraving, to use on the CVS bracelet. Did not work. Just another example of where a company could have spent another nickel to make the thing better and it would work.

IF you look online there is an option for a google number, which can be engraved on a bracelet or necklace. ER's are familiar with the Google number and know to dial it to get info. That is, the number of characters to be engraved is more reasonable. I have not investigated this option, I do not have more money to spend.

Some people wear both. Paramedics have been known to miss seeing both of these on a person.

I've had a medic alert pendant since 1986....most lasted years before I lost them swimming.

My need started with bee sting allergies, later followed by a reaction to penicillin and all varieties... then came a shrimp, lobster and crab meat food allergy and now Sleep apnea.

if I get any more health issues, I may need a "see page 2" pendant.

I used to wear a bracelet, but I was told by the EMS in my area that they check the neck before the check the wrist for Medical Alert jewelry, and since time is usually of the essence, I want the information where they go first.

I now wear a necklace, I purchase mine from American Medical ID (http://www.americanmedical-id.com/) - just the stainless steel - though eventually, if I can find what I like, I'll switch to titanium for longevity. I also have a USB that is on my key chain as I have more medical issues than just sleep apnea.

But the thing I wanted to suggest to you:

I wear the regular classic: Image I have my name on the front with the words "CPAP USER". On the back, I have my medical issues: Severe Sleep Apnea, Titanium Lumbar Implant, and my allergies. This is my permanent medallion, I don't get a new one every time my pressure changes.

Then attached to this is a charm;Image - on the back of it is "CPAP PRESSURE 10 CMH2O" - this has changed a few times. Much less expensive to manage just changing the charm than changing the whole thing.

This is brilliant. I've weebled about doing this partly because I know that pressure needs change.

I also continue to weeble about wearing something like this. I figure if I'm hospitalized, and in a coma or otherwise unable to communicate, I probably have bigger problems than my SDB, but experience has led me to believe that hospital staff might not notice the SDB and my grieving family might not think to mention it. And with an untreated AHI of 71-ish, not having CPAP while unconscious is going to be bad for me in any event.

That's pretty funny stuff right there. I like the idea mentioned of a USB drive but don't know how fast they'd be able to look that up. I'm fortunate in that I have a latex allergy, apnea and high blood pressure nothing else. Not too bad. In fact feeling pretty good about myself right now. . I hadn't thought about it but yeah, probably a good idea to have something. You could also put the info on a note on the homescreen on your phone. I don't know about you but I always have my phone with me.

First responders will look for an ICE ("In Case of Emergency") entry. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_case_of_emergency

Thanks for the reminder, I need to set this up on my new phone.

That we are, mate!

I just found an app for my Windows phone and I'm sure there's one for iPhones/Android/whatever. You don't even have to dig into my contacts list any more.

Out of curiousity...What would they do differently if they new I had sleep apnea? I'm sure this is not wrong.. but it never occured to me that this was neccessary.
