Sleep+apnea+and+surgical+complications

I keep seeing this brought up in the forums. Surgery and OSA is not a good mix!!!!

Make sure all pre and post operative OSA issues are well understood by all medical personel involved!!!!

Please!

The second case history and subsequent lawsuit regarding the UPP was pretty scary stuff. Interesting link tho. Thanks Todzo

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Interesting. Last week I had a colonoscopy at a local surgical center. I was a bit nervous since this was a new doc at a new facility in a new town, so I wasn't feeling much confidence - especially when they anesthesiologist came in and I asked why I need him as I've never had one before, and he said they were giving me profonol. Yikes! But I digress. I obsessively told every staff person I had OSA, and they responded for me not to worry because when they see sleep apnea on a chart that have a protocol they go to for these patients. Time and again I was reassured that they were in tune with the presence of OSA. Not sure how that would have played out if a problem developed, but was glad they weren't oblivious or dismissive.

I would not have a UPPP for anything. Only reason I did the tonsillectomy was due to recurrent ear, nose and throat infections going back years that I just got fed up with. The UPPP and all other "sleep apnea surgeries," you can flush down toilet.

If I was rich, I would consider the manibular break procedure, that cures OSA. But that is very expensive even by surgery costs, requires an expert surgeon who is board certified in sleep medicine in addition to surgery and requires probably about a year of intensive recovery, that I dont have.

tonsillectomy and maybe nasal deviated septum/sinus surgery is as far as Id be willing to go. My tonsillectomy has been hell. I expected it to be hell and it is hell.

Eric

Same here. They had a nurse sitting right by my head, right beside my gurney, close enough to pat my head and hear me breathe. I started to regain consciousness as the scope was being retracted. She said they backed off on the profonol because my sleep apnea started to kick in when I was under. Frankly, I can't imagine better monitoring than that, with the nurse sitting right there watching me, listening to my breathing, and cutting back the anesthesia at the first sign of a breathing problem.
