Hello everyone,
I am having issues with the % spontaneous cycled breaths. I first need to really understand what it is. Just looking at it, it sounds like the percent of breaths you've taken on your own. Hence the word spontaneous. That however is not what it is. I have searched high & low for a answer. Most of the results I get back deal with ventilators. I am using a s9 Auto VPAP in Auto mode. IF I stop breathing, this machine does not breath for me.
One result said it had something to do with your breathing pattern, which I do not get.
The reason I want to know is, my normal % spontaneous cycled breaths are between 97 & 100 percent. Suddenly a couple days ago it dropped down to 95 then to 91 & then to 85 percent. My chest does not feel any different.
I got the machine about in 2012. I did not know anything about the settings, outside pressures & so on. I see the machine is set to defaults when it comes to Ti Max & Ti Min. (2.0 & 0.3). MY respirations according to the ResScan are Median of about 18, 95 percentile of about 21 & the max varies. I am a shallow breather. I do have centrals daily But they average out now to about 1 per hour per month. There are a couple times a month where I do have about 60 central events in a row, over a 45 minute period. I take one mil. of Ativan before bed to keep the centrals down, as the vpap auto does nothing for them.
My AHI's have not changed, even though the % spontaneous cycled breaths have.
The only changes I have made in my life was to drop a small portion of tegretol. I usually take 400 mg a day in combination with 800mg per day of Dilantin for sensory type seizures. I did however start taking it again in case it was the cause.
The reason I dropped it was because off & on it would cause double vision & balance problems for about 2 hours. IT seemed to build up in my system over time. I also shoveled a bunch of snow just before the drop in % spontaneous cycled breaths began.
Sorry to be jumping all over the place, just trying to get things down that may be related to those % spontaneous cycled breaths. As I said, the term itself is deceptive. It has nothing to do with breathing on your own, as opposed to assisted breathing. All my breaths have to be spontaneous, otherwise, I would be dead. As the vpap auto does not assist in breathing. Like I said, I don't understand how it relates to patterns of breathing.
I do have bronchitis and I do cough off & on with the machine on, due to the pflem moving up in my chest after laying down. IT did not seem to cause any changes to the Hello everyone,

I do have bronchitis. For the first 10 minutes or so, I clear my chest, because the phlem moves up. I use the FX nasal mask, which makes it easy to cough. This however had never caused an issue with the % of cycled spontaneous breaths in the past. My AHI does not effect it. I could have an AHI of 2 and have a 92% of cycled spontaneous breaths & yet have a AHI of 15 on a bad night of centrals & have a 99% cycled spontaneous breaths.
I would really appreciate your help
Thanks in advance
Rick

Re: % spontaneous cycled breaths
I'm posting this because I probably went on a little to long in the first part. Makes it hard for reading.
What is % spontaneous cycled breaths, as found on the vpap auto. I know it is not the amount of breaths you have taken on your own. It has something to do with the rhythm of your breathing against the Ti on IPAP & EPAP. What could cause it to drop from say 99% to 90% overnight & over the last few days.
thanks
