I wouldn't hold my breath on the statement that it only last for a short while.

Usually lifetime.
Chances are, if you use cpap faithfully, life tends to be longer.

I would say whoever said that was desperately hoping that losing weight would help them, either that or they had been told they only had a 2 years to live.

I'd be interested in who told you that? A doctor or "civilian?"

Everything I've heard indicates that apnea gets worse, not better as you age for most people.

There might be a few people who get better, but I think it's rare.

Eight years since I started treatment myself, and I know I had it for several years before that. I think my dad had it for 30+ years. I remember him snoring and stopping breathing when I was a kid.

I like your title of this post.

I think most of us would say

"Once you go cpap, you never go back."

To bobdylan:

My 'sleepatologist' told me that except in the case of the grossly obese who finally save their lives by losing weight, once you benefit by using the machine you'll always need it.

I've always been average or even trim in my weight, was a long-distance runner most of my life, and now bike everywhere weather permits. I did 2,250 miles last year (that's an avergae of over six miles every day of the year for you Obama voters) at age 62 and still badly needed to become a CPAP user.

Here and there I've had to spend a night without my gizmo and, believe me, it was like someone stuffed a towel down my airways. I'd wake up thinking, "THIS is how I tried to sleep for years?".

To make a short story long, use your machine every time you sleep.
