Filters?

Post by Rich » Mon Apr 24, 2006 7:57 am

Does anyone use filters? Where in the equipment are they placed? Are they necessary?

Thank you!

on the filter area on the back of the blower thingy.

yes

(having said that, it actually depends on where you want the dust and lint and danders and pollen and soot and cat hairs to end up. your nose and lungs will do a pretty good job of cleaning the air, and the exhaust air will end up nearly as clean)

Rich,

I believe the filters are a very important aspect of XPAP. otherwise, all sorts of air contaminants are being concentrated and pumped, potentially, right into your respiratory tract. Where the filter is depends on your machine, but you will usually find the intake port on the backside (where the power cord is). My old Tranquility Quest (may it R.I.P) had a rather large sheild-shaped intake and filter, about 4" X 4". My brand new ResMed S8 Autoset Vantage has a filter only about 1" X 1.5". Most machines use disposable filters that should be replaced every 4-6 months, depending on environment. many also have washable foam ones available. Bottom line: Check your owners manual!

ResMed Swift Nasal Interface- Medium

I like my S8 Vantage but I must say that filter doesn't look like it does very much of anything. I figure a filter that small, designed to last six months with air being pulled through it eight hours a day, must not be trapping much stuff per hour. I've been using mine just over a month in a fairly dusty house and the filter looks absolutely pristine. I wish there were a more confidence-inspiring filter built in.

The square Resmed filters were designed to be changed on a monthly basis, not every 6 months. For the foam type non disposable filters, they are supposed to be changed every 6 months.

Sorry to contradict you, Guest11, but the manual for my S8 Vantage states that the filter should be checked every month. It then states that in most instances, it only needs changing every 6 months.

On my machine, a PB 420E, and assume that on all others, a disposable filter can be inserted after the foam filter, to give added filtration.

Once I added a disposable filter, I felt a major difference in congestion, and when I saw how discolored it got after a few weeks, I would not give up using them. Cleaning the foam filter weekly (PB instructions) does change the rate at which the disposable gets discolored. It's worth every penny for
me. I can't say I ever noticed a change in what the foam filter looks like.

O.

Where do I buy filters for my machine (pictured below)?
