Mouth or Night Guard for Sleep Apena

My Doctor suggests that I try a prescribed mouth piece for my sleep apnea. Any suggestions as to type and what I can expect to pay.

Why not CPAP? It's the gold standard for treatment of sleep apnea.

I'd go through your dentist instead of a dr if you're going the mouth guard route.

Just to be sure, have you ever been told you have TMJ issues? Or worse, do you ever get pain in the jaw? If you do be VERY CAREFUL about this idea. The way a mouth guard for OSA works is that it repositions your bottom jaw to move the tissues so they don't close.

You might want to visit the dental section of the apnea support board, http://www.apneasupport.org and look for posts by Dr. Luisi, a sleep medicine dentist. He has been very helpful in answering questions I had about dental devices in PMs.

He seems to feel that the TAP III device is generally the best one for all types of sleep apnea. Initially, he kept mentioning that it was best for people with severe apnea but found that because many of his patients with minor apnea weren't doing as well with other devices that it would be best used for those types of cases.

Of course, I understand it all depends on the initial examination of your airway as to what might work the best.

Anyway, you might want to go to that board and register so you could PM him with your questions. I just wish there were sleep medicine dentists like him in my area who were straight forward. Another post.
