First sleep....
First sleep....
Just used my CPAP with a nasal mask for the first time. It worked well. I only took it off once! The only question I have is sometimes when I woke up and I opened my mouth it felt like my mouth was full of air and I was relieving a bunch of pressure. Is this normal?

Re: First sleep....
Welcome, Sam!
The mouth full of air is fairly common starting out. It's even hard to talk until your mouth learns how.
If you can keep your mouth shut without a chinstrap or tape, you have many more mask options,
and you are ahead of a lot of us. Many suggest you practice keeping your tongue up against the back
of your upper teeth.

You will eventually keep the back of your throat closed so the air goes down instead of out your mouth - you'll know because you can talk then.

Wait...you can talk? Lol what about with a hybrid?
Re: First sleep....
Sure you can talk with the Hybrid mask...probably will be difficult to understand though.Mirrasi wrote:Wait...you can talk? Lol what about with a hybrid?
All joking aside...I can now talk normally with the mask and machine blowing air up my nose with zero loss of air pressure out the mouth. I can yawn and not have any air escape through my mouth. It took some time to master the trick of keeping the back airway blocked but it can be done.
When I first started therapy talking was difficult...weird feeling and sounded worse. Now I can talk pretty much normal...just like daytime talking. It took several months though. I didn't really make a conscious effort because normally I don't need to talk once I turn the machine on anyway...then one night I needed to say something and didn't bother turning the machine off and I discovered that it was easy to do.

Re: First sleep....
When I used the machine yesterday it was during the day as I am on night shift. There was nobody around to talk to. Reading the talking while in use comments intrigued me so I just tried it. Wow it is funny sounding and feeling. I never thought of it! Well off for some better quality sleep again.

She is right. You can train the muscles of your soft pallet to control the air flow through your mouth.herefishy wrote:You will eventually keep the back of your throat closed so the air goes down instead of out your mouth - you'll know because you can talk then.
You can try first without CPAP. Open your mouth and breathe through your nose without letting air flow in or out of your mouth ... you can lightly place your hand over your open mouth to make sure you are not allowing air to flow in or out of the mouth.
Then put on your mask and turn the CPAP on and try the same thing ... breathe only through your nose while keeping your mouth open and not letting any air flow in or out your mouth.
Then practice letting pressurized air out of your mouth during exhale (cuz you can't inhale through your mouth while under CPAP pressure).
Finally you can practice speaking on your exhales.
The above assumes you are NOT using a FF mask. With FF mask, breathing or talking through your mouth is not a big issue ... except that your mask will probably leak while talking and your mouth will dry out if you breathe through it for more than a few minutes.

I bought one of these from cpap.com and it is really handy for coughing or talking. When you talk you can be understood very clearly. Great little gadget. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/ez-tal ... -cpap.html

Squid: Interesting. I sometimes cough... and I just go ahead and do it. Does this conclaption, interrupt the air flow? If so, what for?squid13 wrote:I bought one of these from cpap.com and it is really handy for coughing or talking. When you talk you can be understood very clearly. Yes you pull a small lever down and it stops the air flow so you can talk and be understood and I guess cough so you aren't coughing against air pressure. It works great for talking, I don't cough much.Sheriff Buford wrote:Squid: Interesting. I sometimes cough... and I just go ahead and do it. Does this conclaption, interrupt the air flow?
