Puffy eyes

Post by ccl » Sat Feb 02, 2013 5:26 pm

Hi,

I'm new at using CPAP but noticed that since I started using the machine, my eyes are extremely puffy. I have "balloons" both above & below my eyes that just don't go away from one day to the next. I searched the forum for information and found that others have this same issue, but have never found any response as to why it's happening (only "go see your doctor"). I'm sure that by now someone has gotten a response to why. Can anyone pass along that information? (I will see my doctor for a regular physical in the next few weeks but would like some insight to share with her.)

I don't believe there is a single definitive reason for this;
it does seem to be quite uncommon, and if it seems to be significant in your case,
then go see a doctor; then come back and share, please.
If it goes away before your visit, please ask about it and tell us.
We are just patients/pappers, too.

I have them,too. My theory is that air is being forced through my sinuses into the skin beneath my eyes and this is causing the puffing.

{Kidding!}

I think someone once suggested that there might be a circulatory component,
with the eye pouches after cpap a result of lying still, rather than tossing and turning all night.
I would try a cool pack, but not ice.

Thanks to eveyone who has posted replies so far. I also wonder if it's a circulatory component that is being restricted by the mask pressing onto my face. I d have to say it's amazing that I'm sleeping through the night. It was at a point where I thought I had bladder issues after getting up between 3-7 times EVERY night for years.

I have had puffy bags under my eyes on occasion. Mostly when it happens it is usually because I have had my face buried in the bed pillow and probably from pressure of the strap sort of cutting off circulation.
It doesn't happen all the time and when it does happen it is usually just really noticeable under one eye...the eye buried in the bed pillow.

Used to be, ladies used tea bags to erase puffy eyes. Wet ones, I presume, and probably because they just stayed cool.

I have had the bags under my eyes ever since I started using the CPAP. I have asked several doctor's and never really got an answer. It seems to be a common problem for most of us. Has anyone really found out why and what can be done about it. I have them 24/7.

The tannin in chilled, used tea bags (Oriental type, not herbal) has been credited with reducing inflammation.
It is recommended for under-eye "pouchies", and sunburn, as well.
It feels nice, too.
