Jaw pain

Post by Hornpiper » Sat Jan 19, 2013 4:22 pm

Sorry if this has been asked before. I have had a CPAP now for two days with a Swift FX nasal pillow mask. I have awakened both nights with a pain immediately behind the left side of my jaw right under the TMJ. The right side seems fine. The pain feels like a muscle cramp but not quite as serious. I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and, if so, what they have done about it.

If it is not on too tight - a common mistake - you maybe clenching your jaw at night. One can be stressed in sleep too, especially when something as strange and new to you a cpap therapy is happening. If you think it is stress, try wearing the equipment while watching tv to get your body/mind more relaxed about the whole thing.

If you have been diagnosed with TMJ... make sure that your mask isn't tight. I have to make sure that if there's pressure that it's to push my jaw up instead of in.

When my dentist said to stop clenching my jaws at night, I could buy an expensive mouthpiece, or just stick a piece of foam rubber between my teeth, and amazingly that worked to keep me from clenching. Might be the problem, don't know.
