Vaseline & Nasal Pillows: not a good idea

Post by Guest » Wed Apr 19, 2006 11:44 am

There have been a few posts about using vaseline to lubricate nasal pillows. I don't recommend this.

Vaseline is a petroleum-based lubricant, and as such it will breakdown and deteriorate the mask quicker than its normal lifespan (this is why they don't recommend lubricating condoms with vaseline). Vaseline also has a distinct odor that might bother some people and it can irritate if it travels up yer nose.

Better choices that have been mentioned before are Ayr Saline Gel, Simply Saline Gel, and, recommended by my DME, K-Y Jelly. KY has different thicknesses too to accomodate your preferences. Just don't get the "self-heating" kind!

Gee, here we go again with our anonymous pontificating "Guest" sharing his/her wisdom of the ages.

As proof that he/she is full of bulls***, is the statement about not using petroleum based products with condoms. Well, you complete idiot, condoms are made of LATEX not silicone, so you're comparing apples and oranges.

As for odor, that's another complete crock. We're not talking about diesel oil here. There is NO odor.

As I have stated repeatedly, I have used Vaseline in and on my nares for 2 1/2 years with absolutely no adverse effects either to my Breeze nasal pillows, or my health.

I think a product made of petro jelly and menthol called Vicks, has been
used in noses for many years....

From the Vick's website:

The Vicks VapoRub medicated vapors begin to work immediately to relieve your cough. VapoRub is applied externally, so it doesn't interact with other medication the way pills can.

"Warnings:
For external use only; avoid contact with eyes."

"Do not use:

by mouth
with tight bandages
in nostrils
on wounds or damaged skin"

"Failure to follow these warnings could result in serious consequences."

OK, we have 2 or 3 products that are not approved by the FDA for use
up your nose. However, all of these products wre used for this purpose
before we even had an FDA. (Vicks, Vaselene, and Bag Balm). So where does one find the side affects and drug interaction data for legacy drugs?

Anybody got any Hadacol?

Vaseline in the Nose is regularly administered by Drs!!!

Post by ThStoddart » Thu Apr 20, 2006 9:15 am

Strange, when I was a kid and hospitalized they needed to stick a tube in my nose and down to my stomach. And what did they use to lube the tube before putting it in my nose? You guessed it, petroleum jelly.

I also remember getting recurring nose bleeds one time and seeing the doctor. He diagnosed that I had ruptured a small capillary from blowing my nose too hard. His prescription? Use a cotton swab to coat the inner lining of my nose several times a day with vaseline until the ruptured healed.

I also battle nasal allergies; a websearch will show you that petroleum jelly is widely prescribed for use in the nose to alleviate allergy side effects.

ThStoddart,

Boy, aren't you glad to know all those hospitals and doctors were all wrong? Lucky you aren't dead by now from naso-vaselino-itis or something.

And leave us naught but grief and pain

It's obvious that "Guest" didn't do his homework on "Vaseline".
Since reading the garbage that "Guest" posted, I've done a lot of reading about it and Amigo is RIGHT ON!

Don't be afraid to use it. It's quite safe. (and odorless)

Best wishes,

IMHO we are becoming a far too easy mark for this "guest". He, or she, knows that all they have to do is post on this forum to kick up an uproar. We must have provided hours of entertainment for them.

I suspect that this is the same Troll just making his, or her, periodic visit to rile us up.

Lets not take the bait next time, how about that?

That SOUNDS like a good idea, but he/she/they have been around since I started reading this forum a year ago and apparently get their "kicks" from posting "garbage". The mis-information that they post may be taken as fact by those who really don't know or don't do follow-up research.

I'm glad to see that the forum Administrators finally put a lock on that other thread. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if they deleted the whole thread. That kind of stuff was uncalled for.

Best wishes,

SB, you are undoubtedly correct about being "baited," and I did initially consider just ignoring the obviously ignorant prattle.

However, the problem, as I see it, is not one for the educated CPAP user, but, rather, all those Newbies who come here for valid information, and are confronted with very mixed and confusing messages.

All too often these "posts" are just plain wrong, and I think we have a responsibility to the newcomers to point them out.

If there's another way, please let me know.

How about, when we recognize he, or she, for what they are post a big red:

TROLL!!!!!

IGNORE THE NONSENSE!!!!!

as a final remark. Just like we do with spam. It may take a little while to realize we are being goaded but to feed this jerk's ego makes no sense.
