I am finding it impossible to sleep on CPAP due to air coming into mouth. First I tried nasal pillows, but air started filling my mouth, then being expelled, which in turn caused mouth breathing. Keeping mouth closed with chin strap or taping could not stop the problem .
I then went to Resmed Quattro FX full face mask. Same problem. It is difficult to fall asleep as there is always "something going on", much of which is the gradual bubbling of air into the mouth after about 15 minutes (I breath through my nose while awake). If I deliberately open my mouth, the problem is less, but this leads to mouth breathing and dry airway despite humidifier at 4.5. Tongue position only helps while I concentrate onit, which also keeps me vigilant and awake. I am finding it impossible to fall asleep on CPAP. Any suggestions ?

Air Coming Into Mouth- Need Advice
Re: Air Coming Into Mouth- Need Advice
Keep practicing the tongue position thing. Practice it during the day. Eventually the tongue will learn to stay in place and stay in place out of habit and you won't have to make a conscious effort. That's about the only thing we can use as a barrier to keep the air from trying to prematurely exit the airway via the mouth.
Using a full face mask doesn't stop the air from entering the mouth. All it does is stop the loss of therapy pressure out the mouth.
I can yawn a nice big yawn and not have pressure enter my mouth because my tongue has learned to stay in position.
When air enters the mouth the cheeks poof out...we call this chipmunk cheeks and it is a common occurrence. Some people have had to resort to using some sort of wrap around the cheeks compressing the cheeks to stop the inflation. For some people their tongue is rather small and it doesn't make a good barrier but if you can block the air with your tongue some of the time....yours is probably large enough.
