I am a little "cynical".....

Post by Summer Rain » Thu Jan 10, 2013 3:45 pm

I have noticed (on the few occasions when I was able to get a little sleep with the Cpap on) That I actually would doze off and then wake up having "an apnea episode", while the Cpap was "blowing away" in my face? Hello? It makes me wonder if it's even effective? Or maybe not so effective for everyone.....? Now I know that it is a billion dollar industry....so probably not much reliable info. on how "ineffective" they are? Would love some "credible" research?

There is lots of credible research.
What does your data say? How about posting the graphs of that time period? Maybe your pressure isn't right - one night in a strange lab doesn't always get the right pressure. Maybe it was still on the ramp. Maybe it was a transitional central? Maybe you were in REM and you hadn't got to REM in the lab. We can't help if we can't see the data.

I'm cynical as well. I do not think sleep apnea exist. Your tongue can not fall back and block your airway while sleeping. Humans are not this flawed.

I think it is actually the evil dolls, teddy bears, action figures and rogue gnomes coming alive in the middle of the night trying to suffocate us.

It's only effective if your settings are right. Like anything else. But without knowing what your titrated pressure was from your sleep study, and how your machine is set up, we can't even offer a guess.

Cpap is definitely effective!! For the past 7 weeks, I've gotten the best sleep I have experienced in the past 20 years.... on cpap. Multiple other health benefits too. Stick with it. DEAN

Are you serious??? Didn't you just spend $3,000+ from your FSA account on CPAP supplies for a disorder you think doesn't exist? Or are you trying to be funny? I don't get it.

The mere fact that I am alive is a testament to the effectivity of xPAP. My initial study showed an AHI over 70. Most nights now are under 1. Rarely more than 2 AHI. And the occasional night with NO events.

Without xPAP, I'd have died from a stroke years ago. Or committed suicide...

I'm pretty sure that cosmo was kidding, considering his second paragraph says, "I think it is actually the evil dolls, teddy bears, action figures and rogue gnomes coming alive in the middle of the night trying to suffocate us.

I agree with ugwhatname' thought. It was surely 'tongue-in-cheek' but it is probably hard to tell with him wearing the astronaut helmet and all .

If you are using a full face mask, and wake up with the feeling of air moving from anything but the vents on the mask, then you have a leak, which mitigates the effective-ness of treatment.

Let me put that another way. Please describe what is exactly happening to you better. I am sure you are correct in saying something is not working right for you. Perhaps we can help you to pinpoint what that might be.

Well, it is entirely possible that I may not be doing things exactly right, yet... as I'm barely "beginning to begin" on this jouney! BUT....I seemed to be having an "event"...with the Cpap blowing in my face and it didn't seem to be helping? Just my impression in my half awake state?? Maybe one needs time to train themselves to work with what the machine is trying to offer? Or I think that not all sleep problems have to do with an obstruction (i.e. the tongue or whatever?) I believe that I heard somewhere that it can also be caused by some other problems... involving the signals from the brain getting mixed up or something? I 'm so new and hearing so much so fast that I can't really remember what I heard....?

What machine are you using ...could you add it to your profile and if it won't stick just type it in the comments section?
The humidifier you have chosen has not been dispensed in over 5 years.
So you wouldn't have got old equipment unless you got a machine from family or friend.
Let's figure out what machine you have so we will know if there is any data on it that might explain some of your issues.
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=72302&p=665165#p665165
Look at the above link to see if you can spot your machine and look on the bottom of your machine for a 3 digit model number. Tell us the model number and we can tell you which machine.
