Waking up Nightly

Post by SmilingSharon » Mon Jan 07, 2013 8:00 pm

Hello Friends!
I just started using my CPAP machine in December 2012. I have no problem wearing the mask throughout the night. I have had the machine for 3 weeks, and have been able to wear it throughout the night from day one. I have noticed that I wake up throughout the night though. I am able to go back to sleep, but completely waking up multiple times each night can't be good in general. Will this go away?
Thank you!

Your machine is data capable. There is software available that will let you see what is happening. It maybe that your machine is not set up right for your needs, after all the pressures are set based on one night in a strange place.

Sharon,

The big question is why your are waking up. It could be that your treatment isn't dialed in, and your brain is waking you up to get you to breathe. In that case, folks often wake up needing to go to the bathroom. Another reason could be that you are sleeping so much better than before that your brain doesn't see the need for any more sleep. In that case, your brain is done sleeping and ready to get up and start a new day. A third possibility is that something else is disrupting your sleep. It could be something with your body, or it could be something external. Getting the statistics and data charts from your machine is probably going to be the next step. You can approach that through your sleep doctor and respiratory tech, or you can learn to download your own data and post it here on the forum.

I fell into the category of my braining thinking that I was done sleeping for the night after just 3 hours of sleep. That faded over time, and it took me about 6 months before I was consistently sleeping through the night. Basically, my brain had to learn how to sleep all over again since I hadn't had any effective sleep in over 10 years before starting CPAP.

Thank you so much! John, those thoughts make a lot of sense. Thank you for the wisdom! I need to get some software. I have another post on the site looking for software for a mac computer.

You can download Sleepyhead software free from member 'Pugsy' (lower down on her postings)... so far it's the only software that works on Macs (of which I have one, but don't use SH).
