Looking for reviews on Fisher and Paykel Oral Mask

Post by sleepnasta » Sat Jan 05, 2013 9:35 am

I'm on my second cold this winter already which makes my nasal pillows really hard to use if not worthless. I'm thinking about getting an oral mask to use when I have a cold or sinus infection that leave me too congested for my pillows. Does anyone use the oral mask? The Fisher and Paykel is the only one I found on CPAP.com. I'd appreciate any insight you can offer on this mask or oral masks in general. Thanks!

I tried the Oracle. The two big drawbacks are excessive drool and keeping the treatment air form blowing out of your nose. You also need to crank up your humidifier to keep your mouth from drying out. There is one member, I can’t remember his name right now, who got this mask to work and was very helpful. If you search for oracle on the forum you should find lots of information. In my case, I could deal with the drool, I couldn’t figure out how to stop the treatment air from escaping. The nose plugs that come with the mask did not work for me. I was told that over time you drool less and that you can block the air from escaping from your nose. I was unable to work through the adjustment period but YMWV. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I tried the Oracle when I had a Septoplasty surgery.....I couldn't stand it. Just try pinching your nose tight and breathe only from your mouth. Try to do it for 30 minutes...then imagine doing it for 7-8 hours. My opinon is to use a Full Face Mask so you can breathe from your nose or mouth.

My issue with a full face mask is that I'm very claustrophobic. I just want an alternative to my nasal pillows that I can use for emergency backup when I'm stuffed up. Prior to CPAP I was a mouth breather so pinching my nose and trying to breathe through my mouth doesn't really feel that weird to me. I honestly don't know how I took to the pillows so well and have so few leaks.

I'm also thinking about buying this for emergencies when I can't use my nasal pillows. My nose is always congested so I don't think I will have a problem with blocking it off.

Sleepnasta:

Check out my posts on my experiences with the Oracle 2 mask. It is the only mask I can use so I had extra incentive to figure it out. I finally did and have used it exclusively for more than two years.

One of the posters recommends the full-face mask as the solution but for me that was impossible. I tried one once and lasted at best for 6 seconds before I had to rip it off my face - claustrophobia will do that to you.

The main issues in making this mask work are the nose plugs ( get something else instead ) and adjusting for leaks.
Most folks who report leak type issues try to solve the problem by tightening down on the mask. This is bad idea - it leaves your lips either numb in the morning or sore. You only need just a little pressure to completely eliminate leaks and it will just take a couple of nights to get it right for you.

I posted a pix of the nose clip solution which works perfectly and doesn't cause pain or any discomfort.

One caution for those who use chin straps with other mask types and want to try switching to the Oracle 2 - DON'T use a chin strap with this mask ever!!!

As you are able to use this mask, I have the utmost admiration for you.

Well done!
