Masks with quiet fabric difusers

Post by KrisasMan » Sat Dec 29, 2012 10:59 pm

I recently got an F&P Eson mask so my wife would have less noise next to her. I have tried out a few masks over the last year and some were so loud they even bug me. The key feature that makes the Eson so quiet is that they hold air filter material over the vent ports, this breaks up the airflow into a gentle 'cloud'. When you take off the clip that holds the filter 'fabric' on the mask looks like most other vents, a bunch of holes in rows. I think this should be added to every mask! I just have two questions:

1) What other masks have this type of diffuser?
- F&P Eson
- F&P Zest Q

2) Anyone had a problem with this feature on a mask?

Wonder if there's a way to retrofit a diffuser like that to another mask?

If the mask was not designed for use with a particular diffuser, would you need a pressure adjustment to account for the modification?

I guess it could depend on how much of the vent was blocked by the diffuser - whether it left enough room for the vent to work properly. I'm not sure how you'd test it out though... could be difficult if not dangerous.

The Eson spec sheet indicates it reduces the exhaust flow a little, I would guess 2-4 L/min based on their chart. I guess if a mask had a low exhaust flow rate to being with it might not be good but I really think that you could retrofit if your vents are all in one spot (my old Mirage FX wouldn't work for example). The diffuser/filter material is the same as the intake filter material my F&P Icon APAP uses, you would just need to tape it in place with good tape and make sure you don't compress it too much.
