Agrivation with Agriphhoweveritsspellt.

Post by insylem » Thu Dec 27, 2012 7:34 am

Hello,
When I use Cpap some nights the air takes a wrong turn.
Instead of going to the lungs, it goes to the stomach.
I know there is a term for it that starts with "A"
I really don't care what it's called.
How do I make it stop?
Some nights its not a problem.
Other nights it keeps me up

I have not had anything to eat prior to bedtime and still get air in stomach.
I pulled the boxspring half off the bed frame so that I could have
my head end elevated some. I still get air in stomach.

I search the internet. Nothing comes up that's helpful.
I call the Dr's office. No one awnsers at 4am. (You'd think a sleep clinic would have a 24/7 help line)
Maybe they will call back.

I sleep in a recliner. No air in my stomach, OR my lungs AHI > 50

Anyone have any tips to help please?

How long have you been doing CPAP and having these problems? How often do you have these problems? Try to figure out if anything is different.

You need to fix that AHI of 50, apart from any aerophagia problems.

A more modern CPAP machine that collects more data might help.

Confining my comments to just the aerophagia relief:

Flex may help some. Have you got flex turned on for your CPAP machine?

Bilevel (BiPAP/VPAP) may help more.

Some people find some other things help but there's a lot of trial and error. Some things people have tried include:

Not eating near bedtime.
Adjusting the angle of your neck, either pointing the chin up or down.
Sleep on either the left or right side. I forget which one was supposed to be better for aerophagia.
Changing to a nasal or full face mask.
Chin strap, even though you're using a full face mask.
Making an effort to keep your tongue against the roof of your mouth.

Don't be shy about letting the air out of your gut. Sometimes, there are some movements that will help let the air out. There's a position getting down on all fours and lowering your chest that may help let it out the south end. Unfortunately, I haven't found any good tricks to let air out of my stomach.

Aerophagia = H-E-double hockey sticks!
Somewhere, I read that lying on the left side is better than the right side or the back--
it has something to do with the routing of your "plumbing".
Some people find relief using lower exhale pressure (EPR , A-Flex, or C-Flex)
Others use a bilevel machine (different HCPCS code)
because the pressure can be quite a bit lower during exhalation.
If it is bad and you have insurance, you need to convince your doctor to help you get a bilevel machine.

Occasionally, lowering your pressure setting by 1-2 #'s helps... but you need to keep an eye on stats to be sure you're not downgrading therapy by doing it.

Some people have used Gas-X for some relief.
Have a drink of water; get up and walk around. That helps, too.

By the way, "it" is going around. My 3-YO grandson had it last week,
and gave it to everyone else-just in time for the holiday.
The only GOOD thing was he didn't have it any more.

Just had an interesting thought - my colonoscopies have all been with me lying on my left side.... is this for a similar reason of routing of the "plumbing" or doctor preference?

Cheers,
