high blood pressure since starting cpap?

Post by marlasinger » Wed Dec 19, 2012 2:41 pm

I am new to cpap, 3 weeks and the 3 drs appoints I've had since then, each remarked that I had high blood pressure. (never had before)
But they said not to worry about it....(yeah, right)
I called the pharmacist and an MA who asked a doctor, they said it could be from the nebulizer/cpap machine. Anyone else ever have this happen? I thought I highblood pressure was a symptom of untreated sleep apnea?????

Likely a symptom of stress of adapting to therapy; normally our BP goes DOWN with treatment.

How high was you pressure and did it come down after you were in their office for little while? I have white coat hypertension along with high blood pressure. My bp is usually little high when I first get to the Dr's office from the anxiety. After I'm there and relax a bit it comes down.

My BP has come down since starting cpap. I also take meds but it used to be high in the morning (before cpap and with meds) when I woke up and then come down after I was awake for a couple of hours. After being on cpap for 8 months my bp is almost always normal when I wake up.

Same for me on both counts. The white coat syndrome was especially obvious last month. My blood pressure was high when I did my dental xam and detailed cleaning. They had to use a different medication to numb my mouth as the normal one raises blood pressure. They put me on a machine that checks every 10 minutes. I am really afraid of the dentist, and I have had some bad experiences in the past. As a teenager, I had 4 teeth removed, and didn't know I was a mouth breather. Barely got any gas as it was hooked up to my nose. It didn't hurt, but I was aware of every wiggle. Then, about 10 years ago, a dentist tore my lip in two places. I have a small mouth, and due to mouth breathing, chronic chapped lips. The lady had my mouth open as wide as possible (I understand) and then peeled off what she thought was paper, but was really my skin. It took 3 months to heal. I was there to get a detailed cleaning before getting my wisdom teeth out. That was about 10 years ago, and I just got them out last month. One of them has been broken that whole time. I will put up with a lot to avoid dentists and doctors. I did get one of them out 2 years ago as it was broken, and the piece still attached to my gums. I actually put up with it for 2 weeks, as I was hoping the piece would fall out.

So, after the detailed cleaning, they schedule an appointment for getting my wisdom teeth out and a bunch of fillings. But they also informed me that if my blood pressure was too high, they would not do the extractions as they needed to use the medication that raises blood pressure. Well, that made me even more nervous as I just wanted to get it over and done with. I got very serious about taking my medications. I sometimes miss them. And I tried really hard to get as much sleep with my machine as possible since it does help me lower my blood pressure.

I got to the dental appointment, and they checked my blood pressure. 143 over 80 something.Much better than the previous week. They proceeded with the fillings which took almost an hour and a half. Then they checked again. 150 over 99. Still lower than last week, but pushing it. They decided they would do the one top tooth as it would be easier, and then check my blood pressure again. I was so relieved as it meant that at least one tooth would be out, and it would be the one that broke 10 years ago. It did cause occasional problems, and I rarely ate anything crunchy on that side. So, I was much happier to know that at least the bad one would be out. Well, it practically jumped out on its own in less than a minute. So, they checked my blood pressure again, and it was actually DOWN. 137 or 80 something. After 2 hours in the dentist getting 11 fillings and a tooth extraction. And my blood pressure went DOWN. And was in the normal range. I am sure it was because I was relaxed and happy about getting the bad tooth out and no longer worried about whether they would take it out or not. They took the other two out, and I go back next week to get the rest of the fillings done. Amazingly, I have a lot of cavities, but they are all small, so no major work, just lots of little fillings. Not bad for avoiding the dentist all these years and drinking a ton of pop every day for over 20 years. I consider myself lucky.
