Overnight Oximetry results second opinions?

Post by admaster_99 » Fri Dec 14, 2012 6:09 pm

So I had a sleep study done some time ago and the sleep specialist believed I did not have a sleeping problem. I was not convinced so I had my general physician do an Overnight Oximetry, after reviewing the results she believed that I did have a problem. Either way I felt that this was all minor compared to some of my other problems so I let it fall to the waste side. Well after pursuing a bunch of dead ends I am back to the question is my sleep causing my problems. Anyways I don't have the full sleep study test results but I do have the Overnight Oximetry results so I thought I would post them for second opinions. Do I have a reason to be concerned from these results? Also a side note I was on lexapro at the time of this test. thanks.

my opinion is that your o2 data looks ok, especially if it is room air and not added o2.

You can buy your own oximetry unit that has data logging and USB capabilities. Under $50 if you want piece of mind.

I don't have a professional printout of my testing. It was a take home kit. But I did buy my own wrist unit that I use from time to time. I'll post a screen shot later when I get home of my home unit when I went 3-4 days without a CPAP machine. You'll see more spikes than what you have.

I had similar oxygen desaturations during my first sleep study and starting CPAP took care of it.

I don't think that my heart rate went so hi so many times. Is it possible that you don't exercise?
What's missing is your sleep architecture to check if those heart rates correspond with REMs.

I tried a pulse oximeter on my finger for two nights and gave up on it. I am not a physician to deal with it. So what's the purpose.

Given your situation I would pay attention to your sleep study results. If you need oxygen then the sleep study will show it.

Thanks again for the reply, so is it normal for your oxygen levels to periodically dip below 90%. Also is it normal for your pulse rate to jump up so high. Is that maybe a possible sign of Uars? I stay pretty active all day long through my work its by no means like running a marathon but I definitely feel I am physically fit for my age. I am currently only about 15 lbs over weight at 6' tall. I guess I am just going to have to bite the bullet and get a second opinion from a sleep specialist. Even though I know hes going to want me to do another sleep study. I just have such a hard time with falling asleep, I dread doing it again.

to require supplemental oxygen, your o2 must be below a total of i think 5 minutes over a night of sleep. yours is nowhere near that.

By supplemental oxygen I'm guessing you mean cpap therapy also? I just want to make sure I understand correctly, but thank you all very much for the responses I really appreciate it. I've been having a real hard time lately dealing with some of my symptoms. Which actually match UARS perfectly I just wish there was a way I could check for it without spending 3,000 dollars for a sleep study again. If only I knew that the condition existed when I had the first sleep study done.

pretty much if your oxygen level is not below 88% for 5 minutes overnite the doctor will not prescribe and insurance won't pay for overnite supplemental oxygen. supplemental oxygen means an oxygen generator that gives you oxygen thru nasal cannula's. some people use cpap and supplemental oxygen together. in that case the o2 enters thru a line that plugs into an adapter in the cpap hose assembly.

Have your doctor look into upper airway resistance syndrome and CO2 maintenance issues.
