Why do some masks not require prescription

Post by Always tired » Sat Dec 01, 2012 4:41 pm

I recently purchased at FitLife Total FF mask on line from, I think a supplier via Sears. Grand Pap posted the link. I was just on Cpap.com and noticed that the masks I looked at require a prescription. What's the difference or has sleep debt finally taken its toll?
Thanks in advance
A T

Masks should require a prescription just like the CPAP itself.

I've never heard of Sears in the PAP line, but ???? All vendors are supposed to require a prescription, since the mask is medical equipment. However, some do & some don't. Those that do are the most reputable sites, but I have bought from those that don't when I don't feel like the hassle of getting the rx, etc. I also look at price, sometimes its worth the hassle of getting that rx to buy from cpap.com because they offer a better price...sometimes & they do stand behind their merchandise. They also offer return insurance, which when trying a new mask is worth it to come folks.

My understanding is that a prescription is required for the whole mask--there may be something missing.
You may be able to buy the missing part from cpap.com

My understanding is the mask requires no prescription. The headgear requires no prescription. Put them together as a unit and the result requires a prescription.

This is the mask I recently ordered w/o a prescription. However, I think I would have trouble on a return as the mask did not ship directly from Sears. I agree that purchasing from some place like cpap.com is good if problems arise.
Thanks for all of your input.

Most things do not ship from Sears. They don't have much in the way of warehouses. I am most familiar with the garment and linens side. My clients were required to keep stock in their warehouse for the Sears "catalogue". Any orders from their catalogue got sent to the manufacturer/importer who then sent it to the person who ordered it.

There's some disagreement whether masks require prescriptions. Some people or places sell them without prescriptions. Maybe they just haven't been caught yet.

Some manufacturers prohibit their distributors from selling masks without a prescription, and will slap down any of their distributors who offer masks for sale without a prescription.

If someone is selling masks without prescriptions, it's of a benefit to the patient, so don't rock the boat.
