testing pressure from machine

Post by troutman1227 » Thu Nov 15, 2012 2:06 pm

my machine is set at 12. when i first started using it three weeks ago, the pressure felt HIGH to me when i put the mask on. Now, the pressure seems light. can something be wrong with the machine which is lowering the pressure ? am i imagining this ? can i test it ?

Need to know what your equipment is before anyone can answer that question. Go to the User COntrol Panel in upper left corner and fill out your profile listing your equipment and that will appear with each of your posts. Then we won't be guessing.

Go up to the Search line and put in "homemade manometer" and start reading (start at the bottom of the one page of results). In particular, read the posts by the member "tomjax". He offers the simplest way to test the pressure.

And here I just take an old hose, fill it 1/3 way with water and hold it up against a rifle sighting target. That's about as KISS as you can get without involving Gene Simmons
When in doubt, open the case. Remember: If you can't open it, you don't own it!

Prescribed APAP range - 6-10 cm/H2O, titrated at 8.
Current range - 9.0-11.5 cm/H2O - still searching for the magic "zero night" but averaging 2.2 AHI

If you set your machine with a RAMP time ON then during the RAMP the machine starts at a min pressure and increases it gradually.

From my own experience and reading on here, it is common to become accustomed to the air and at some point have to check and see if it is really even on. Can't count the times I've lifted my mask slightly just to confirm it was blowing. That doesn't discount the possibility of a machine malfunction. When I was working with a sleep doc and DME they've both checked my machine periodically. Another spot-check could be if you are watching your nightly data and your AHI is staying low, then your treatment is effective and the machine is likely working. An increase in AHI could be be a warning sign. Or you could just test the machine.

It's very common for it to feel like a hurricane at first, and then feel like it's not on once you get used to it.

I'm using 16 and I have to open my mouth or put my hand in the exhaust air stream sometimes to convince myself it's turned on.
