Can not breath through my nose

Post by fdwrench » Tue Nov 13, 2012 9:41 am

Hi,

I failed my first week long test because I was told that I did not nave a good seal on my mask.

Night one of my second test. It seems that the higher the pressure the more my nose closes. The more my nose closes the higher the pressure goes. The pressure goes so high it blows the hose off of the mask. When I took my mask off in the morning I could not breath through my nose at all for awhile. I guess that this test is trying to find right pressure for me.

Anyone else have this problem?
Any suggestions?

Thank you
Ed

Please go to the User Control Panel and add your XPAP equipment (in pic form, not text) so we can help answer your questions.

I have severe allergy and sinus issues and find I sleep better and wake up with clear nasal passages using a nasal pillow mask. I do use prescription nasal spray sometimes, but only when it's bad.

A few minutes after removing my mask is when I get blocked up again.

Cheers,
xena

Using a Humidifier? If so at what setting?
Breathe okay through the nose if not hooked up to the machine?
What mask are you using?

This is a test machine to find the right pressure for me, no heater or humidifier.
It is a full face mask.
I think that I will give up on the test. If the pressure maxis out each night it will not be a valid test again.
I will contact my Dr.
I will post more when I see what he says.

The air pressure can dry up the nasal mucosa for a lot of people. When the nasal mucosa get dried up they respond by swelling in attempt to maintain moisture. Swelling up equals nasal congestion.
Also if you are using a mask that is applying pressure to the sides of the nose where the turbinates are then that also might cause congestion feeling. Example..try placing your fingers on the sides of your nose up by the bridge area and applying gentle pressure...see if your nose stops up.

So it might be the mask causing the nasal congestion issues or it might be the lack of humidity since you aren't using a humidifier. While a few people can go without added moisture most people do need at least a little added moisture and some people need a lot of added moisture.

They can't get a good test for pressures needed if you can't breathe and can't use the machine.

Hi,
I do not know if I got used to the machine or what but my nose opened up and I could breath ok.

I finished my 7 day sleep study. At day 5 I figured out that I can not sleep on my back. The pressure goes to the max and I can not keep a seal.
I slept on my side the best that I could (bad Shoulders) for the last 2 nights. I slept pretty good and in the morning the high pressure recorded was 6.5.
I was wondering what people think.
Do I need the machine if I stay on my side with a pressure of only 6.5?
Thank you
Ed

Pressure needs have no bearing on the severity of OSA. Severity is based on the number of events and not the pressure that is needed to prevent the events from happening.

Someone needing 18 cm pressure might only have 12 events per hour pre cpap...and be classified as "mild" and someone needing 6 cm pressure might have 100 events per hour pre cpap and be classified as "severe"

Many of us are choking to death when we sleep on our back because our tongues are "falling down into the throat".

Forget sleeping on your back. Learn to sleep on your sides. You might not even need CPAP if you stay on your sides. But check it out before coming to this conclusion.
