POLL: Is didgeridoo gaining more cred. as a txmt option?

General Discussion on any topic relating to CPAP and/or Sleep Apnea.

Do you think playing the didgeridoo may be helpful to some with snoring/apnea?

I've actually tried it! (please comment)

POLL: Is didgeridoo gaining more cred. as a txmt option?

Post by secret agent girl » Tue Nov 13, 2012 9:22 am

The Minneapolis Star Tribune recently ran an article about some guy who believes playing this instrument has helped his sleep apnea.

The article doesn't report whether he's confirmed improvement with a sleep study, or it's just his subjective assessment.

The article also mentions additional studies, including one published in the peer-reviewed British Medical Journal, which covered a Swiss study showing that playing the obscure instrument decreased snoring and daytime sleepiness.

Since some reactive member deleted the previous post of this, y'all will have to search for the article yourself if you're interested in reading it.

There is no more chance of reducing OSA playing a didgeridoo than blowing through a straw! That's IMHO, and from my son who plays a didge.

UNLESS you accompany it with full circular breathing, then it MIGHT HELP A LITTLE, as you need very good neck, throat and mouth strength to do this.

Cheers,
xena

A lady in the local support group plays one.
I asked if she would mind playing it for us.
She declined, saying she sounded "awful".
I'm of the mind that's an indication you're doing it right.

For a very small number of very dedicated practitioners where the issues is a very specific problem, it might help.

Personally I would rather sleep with the machine then spend several hours of my precious awake time practising an instrument that my neighbours will hate and I will never be able to use in public.

WOW, that is impressive. The sound of it started grating on my nerves after a while but that doesn't take away from how talented that guy is playing it.

I'd rather be hooked up to the machine than lose my hearing and lose my mind.

Here's Yothu Yindi - an Australian Aboriginal rock band - the didgeridoo sounds much more pleasant with other instruments in the mix

I listened to some of it; the didge is kind of funky, but nice;
the rhythm and fill-ins are the same old obnoxious synthesizer garbage (IMHO)
This same track is on a lot of cheesy East European and 3rd world recordings.
Pay some musicians and an arranger instead of turning on the keyboard "toy".

Is didgeridoo gaining more cred. as a txmt option?
No.

I have a nice one sitting in my office that I toyed around with for awhile.

If you just love playing the didge it might supplement CPAP treatment.

If you don't love playing it, don't waste your time.
