Good mask for very high pressure

Post by upallnight67 » Thu Nov 08, 2012 7:14 pm

I have recently been titrated to a very high pressure of 27/14 on my bi-pap machine. I had to get a new machine and I'm having a lot of trouble getting a good seal . Does anyone know a mask that will work well with high pressure . The DME company suggested a total face mask as I am having trouble with the full mask irritating the area around my eye. I have researched this type of mask but only found negative reviews. I really want to be compliant but find it hard to deal with the constant irritation and noise that my current mask causes. I also seem to be swallowing a lot of air which causes bloating, nausea , and a great deal of belching. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Notice a lot of leaking with my current full mask also.

You might be surprised.
Mask fit is very personal, and there is no substitute for wearing a mask to determine if it will work.
My DH wears the Fitlife total face mask; as does Sheriff Buford, a member here, and a few others.
Mask reviews are sometimes useful, but not necessarily accurate for everyone.

Well I am willing to try it as what i am using now is leaking bad and causing discomfort. The pressure is so high I am finding it hard to find something that can handle it.

You might try nasal pillows although DMEs seem to think they can't be used at higher pressures, they can. Very little surface area to leak AND a high pressure almost pushes the pillows up against your nose (never IN your nose!) for a good seal.

This may sound trite, but the right one is the one that fits the best, seals the best. It's impossible to say what that will be, unfortunately it means trying many out. Some masks have a similar fit to others - if you find one that's close, you may want to ask about it, since there may be ones with a similar fit.

I am curious regarding what machine they prescribed for you. Most resmed & resp. Machines are rated for a max pressure of 25.

Does your machine look like this one but with maybe a darker gray color?
https://www.cpap.com/cpap-machine/Respi ... -Gray.html
It's the only model S/T in Respironics line that has IPAP pressure to 30 cm.
The newer PR S1 Bipap ST only goes to 25 cm.

If you do have this older model with the smart card there is software available but you also need a special card reader.
Let me know if you do have this older machine and want more information about obtaining the software.

Hello
If you are swallowing air I assume you are not wearing a full face mask and are either breathing thru or leaking from your mouth. In my experience you need to completely eliminate mouth breathing so cpap will work then you can figure out what pressure you need and what mask will work.

As chunkyfrog wrote, there are a few of us on this forum that are sold on the FitLife mask. However, the Sheriff and I seem to be the two members who are the most enthusiastic. He has used it for more than two years and I have been for about three or four months. I am on ASV therapy and my pressure regularly goes over 20 and occasionally goes to 25 and the mask works extremely well for me.

Below I pasted the URLs for three threads regarding the FitLife. Additionally I pasted the URL for a website that had the FitLife mask on sale for $60. I attempted to access the website to see if that price was still available; however, since I am on vacation out of the country, it will not give me access to that webpage. So if you decide you want to consider the FitLife, you might want to check that website to see if that price is still available.

Also, if you decide you want to consider it, I would suggest that you look closely at the thread that deals with using a chinstrap to control leakage at the top of the mask.

I hope that helps. Good luck in your decision.

Unfortunately Grand Pap, that link has disappeared. I tried other methods to find it but couldn't.

Darn, I had made up my mind I was going to get one and risk it not working. I knew I shouldn't have hesitated as that was a too good to be true type of deal.

Thanks for posting it as I am sure you helped alot of people doing that.

Actually, the entire Sears website seems to be down for maintenance. I'd check back a little later and see if the link is working again.
