Smilie question

Post by Moogy » Mon Apr 10, 2006 10:51 pm

Why is it that sometimes I insert a smiley face, and it works, and other times it doesn't? Am I doing something wrong? I have smiles set as "on"

Moogy

well, it seems to have worked this time!

Sometimes it even happens in the same message - some on and some off!

I'll attempt to answer with an example or two.

Here's supposed to be a sad face

Here's a guaranteed smiley face. .

Anyway, that's what I do to make them work. They always work if you follow them with additional punctuation or characters. They don't always work if at the end of a line.

Regards,
Bill

Bill, that is amusing, I started a reply last evening with almost the IDENTICAL examples, then spent another 10 minutes trying to make the emoticons NOT work (by following them with nothing), then abandoned the effort. Couldn't make it NOT work, gave up. Apparently this also doesn't NOT work properly:

I too have noticed that following it with something, anything but another "space" or "cr" character makes it work reliably. I think the basic issue is that the scripts try to squeeze out unnecesary characters somwhat oblivious to the context. Maybe "they" fixed it. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I have found from IM that I need to have a space in front of the smilie -otherwise it just puts text instead of the smilie.

Here is a test:
This is a smiling smilie with no space in front:D
This is a rolling eyes smilie with a space in front

EDIT: That seems to work. Maybe if there is no space in front it thinks it is part of the previous word.

mousetater, that's exactly what has been happening to me. I'll have to try and remember the space!

Edited to note that it worked!!

When you draft up your response, just click on one of the "emoticons" on the left of the screen. It works even when you are in guest mode as I am now

I think you people are terribly immature; spending all this time talking about emoticons.
Do you think everyone's rolling on the floor laughing at those little figures? Image
Well, I just think it's so embarrassing I could cry.
Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead using emoticons. They give me a headache.Image
We are supposed to be discussing sleep Image and mouth taping Image and how to help the ImageS with cpap therapy. This excessive use of emoticons is just plain silly Image and must be stopped. So, no more emoticons Image. You hear me? I'll keep saying it until I beat it into your head Image. We sleep-deprived Image people need each other's support and validation, Image not a bunch of emoticons. Agreed?

What? You disagree? I see. Well then, I'll just leave. How would you feel about that?

Oh yeah? Well then, Image
