How to clean equipment?

Post by jarablue » Tue Oct 30, 2012 11:59 pm

How should I clean my equipment? Should I clean my mask and hose by soaking them in vinegar and water? What should I do?

Thanks!

What have you been doing since March 2011?

Generally speaking, the owner's guide from the manufacturer should have this information for these. If you don't have the specific owner's guides, you can generally download them on the internet.

I disassemble my water tank and mask and wash in the dishwasher. No dishes in the washer at the same time. I don't wash headgear in the washer. I wouldn't wash the foam part of your mask in the dishwasher.

I hook my hose to the kitchen faucet, run hot water through it, and dry it on an old CPAP machine. I'd be afraid dirty water would sit in it between cycles if I washed it in the dishwasher.

I have two hoses, water tanks, and masks. I wash once a week, and let the cleaned set sit dry for a week to help kill the germs off. It's good to have a spare, anyway.

You can buy spare mask parts, hoses, and water tanks. Replace them when they get gunky.

I suggest you get the dishwashable tank for your S9 machine if you don't already have it. You can actually disassemble the non-washable S9 tank for cleaning with a little effort. Once you get a spare tank, you don't have to worry so much about breaking the non-cleanable tank.

I wipe my mask down every morning using Pampers Thick Wipes for Sensitive Skin. You can also use the generic brand. Be sure the baby wipes have no alcohol or aloe. Alcohol will damage the mask plastic and aloe will leave a film. There is a Walgreens close to my work that carries cpap supplies. I get cpap wipes there when they have them. I also wash my mask every weekend with a toothbrush and baby shampoo. I then soak the mask in a plastic tub or a few hours in baby shampoo and water solution. I then rinse the mask very well. If I don’t the baby scent will upset my tummy. Look on the mask manufacturer’s website about vinegar. Some recommend you don’t use it, but I suspect a little won’t hurt. Hope this helps...

Remember that if you do damage something due to "overwashing," the parts are replaceable and need to be replaced every so often anyway.

I use cottonelle wipes on the mask which are okay to wipe your hands and face so I figure it would be okay for the mask? And they are flushable. What do y'all think of the cottonelle wipes? (I just threw out a bunch of pamper wipes away since they weren't flushable.)

from what I could see from your link. they look ok. I couldn't see the ingredients, though. The only thing I am hesitant about are the "cleansers" that were mentioned, but not identified. You could be taking a chance degrading the mask silicone. Masks are expensive. What's up with the flushing? Either the toilet or the land fill has to dispose of the product.
