Dr. Oz today - Tart Cherry Juice

Post by Starlette » Tue Oct 30, 2012 8:07 pm

I don't know how much I missed of this part of Dr. Oz today. He was making mention of Tart Cherry Juice to help with sleep (insomnia and sleep apnea). Here's the link: http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/amazing- ... erry-juice.
Thought I'd make mention of it for us xpap folks.

I used to drink it, and can't tell you if it improved anything. It is expensive. Yesterday Dr Oz said drinking white tea (2 cups a day) helps you lose weight, and also a shotglass full of pine nuts. I'll let you know if it works. I just had to pick some up at the grocery store.

Prob like most things of this type... it works if you want it to work.

Anyway, if it works wonders, please let us know.

As I understand it, tart cherry juice comes from the Montmorency cherry. There are purported health benefits with this fruit. You have to read the labels on the store shelves closely to make sure that you're not buying some sugary drink or some blend that is being passed off as tart cherry juice. The one place that I've been able to find 100% tart cherry juice is at Trader Joe's. They sell a 1 quart bottle for $4. I'll typically fill up a water bottle with 1/4 tart cherry juice and 3/4 water, as the juice is strong and tart by itself. If you research this more, I believe you'll find that 100% Cranberry juice has about the same health benefits as the tart cherry juice.

Before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, taking it caused me a few times to sleep through the night without waking up. But then I recall, it didn't work a few other times I tried it. I just bought the regular tart cherry juice.

Hmm, maybe it is time to give it a shot again.

Dr Oz seems to cater to his sponsers. Beware. I was in a health food store while his show was on and the phone rang the entire time... calls asking if they stocked what he recommended.

Be careful with the pine nuts, I just read an article about how they can cause "Pine Mouth," which basically ruins your taste buds for weeks.http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Wellness/p ... JDQvWeBz40

Just saw this, and didn't see anything about sleep apnea, just sleep. I doubt that this would have any effect on sleep apnea that results from internal architecture of the mouth and throat area (obstructive). But it supposedly makes your bucket of melatonin overflow instead of leak *smile*...I got to admit, I don't think that the visual aids added much to this one *smile*.

Anyways, I've already heard about tart cherry juice relative to gout for some time, this is more good stuff attributed to tart cherry juice. I'd like to have the references that he used, in the beginning he referred to "groundbreaking research". I wonder what the "groundbreaking research" was, how it was done, how many subjects over how much time, or are we talking about "groundbreaking ancedotal research" *smile*? I guess I'm a little cynical about miracle claims for food...always interesting, though.

My problem with the juice would be potential GERD - it may be a great antioxidant (so many acidic tart fruits are), but what it might do to your system while sleeping could be a big problem.

IMHO Dr. Oz is just a glorified, highly paid snake oil salesman.

He has some interesting and useful ideas, but for the most part - his push is for his sponsors and/or whatever is the flavour of the day in medicine.

Cheers,
xena

I used to buy dried Montmorency cherries--but can't get them any more.
Sugar added--probably canceled out the benefit.
I have frozen blueberries to mix into my yogurt.
No evil sugar added . . .

I read about the tart cherry gout remedy too. I think it was on this forum.
No references because he thinks his audience is stupid.
I liked him when he was first on Oprah. I always wondered why she kept him on such a tight leash. Now I know.
