I have about had it with testosterone replacement therapy

Post by Suddenly Worn Out » Sun Oct 21, 2012 7:01 pm

ive been on Androgel for over two months now. I have the cruddiest sleep on the stuff. My libido is actually lower on the Androgel than it was off the stuff. The first few weeks on it, I felt a noticeable increase in libido and other positive things that was nice. But that has now gone away and libido is worse on it than off it. But my sleep is worse on it and I dream hardly ever on it. Its like being on a powerful stimulant.

I will just say it, I dont really care whether or not I have low T at my age. Like I am going to pick up some hot piece of a@@ at a bar at my age. Hell, Im just trying to survive. Quality Sleep is more important to me than whether I can get it up good or not.

I see the Internist who prescribes it to me. I think he is trying to help me and all in one of few ways he can figure out, which I truly appreciate. But Im going to tell him nicely, I feel worse on this stuff than off it, overall. There are a few good things about it, but overall, I dont notice any benefit from it. And it has a lot of side effect that I DO FEEL. I dont know how my Internist will react to that. I have told him several times that has been how Ive reacted to testosterone before in the past, though. So its not like he has not heard it before.

Just had to rant about it. I want to go to bed, go into that deep sleep feeling you get from CPAP and wake up feeling like I got at least (some) decent sleep.

Eric

Just say no. The real reason to use it is to maintain muscle mass. Other uses can be useful, but as you say, not our problem nowadays. the only bad effect I worry about is prostate cancer or other cancers.

As we age we loose muscle mass, not a good thing. Jim

Makingsleep worse, not likely.

I have been told testosterone is a stimulant. And messes with slow wave sleep. I know since Ive been on the stuff, my sleep is less deep and I dream never anymore.

Talk to your doctor about reducing your dosage; or eliminating it entirely.

That thought is seriously crossing my mind. Two months of mostly enduring discomfort, basically. I have a suspicion he will merely want to increase the Androgel dose. Which will mean another month or two of discomfort. If I go along with that, I know what will happen based on past experiences. I will feel a little better for a week or two, then it will fizzle out and I will be like it is now...sh*tty. I aint putting myself thru that.

You need the shots. The gel is too expensive and not as effective. Been there. Low T is a serious thing and should be carefully managed by your physician. Good luck.

Past the first week or two on the Androgel, I notice almost no benefit mood wise or libido wise from Androgel. If anything it is making my mood worse. Maybe some mild stimulant feeling. Or maybe that is just my blood pressure getting elevated from TRT.

Gonna be having a talk soon with the Internist who prescribes me this stuff. I appreciate his desire to help me, but, this Androgel aint helping its making me worse.

What was the basis for going on this in the first place? A lab test? Particular symptoms leading to a rigorous diagnosis?

What is this "internist?" An experienced endocrinologist?

When meds don't work, I prefer to stop and re-group, unless it is a simple matter of just adjusting a dose, But in this case, it doesn't sound that way.

"Carefully managed" is the key--you need to be sure that your physician has the knowledge and experience to know what they are doing. This can be difficult.

Good luck!
