Pets and equipment

Post by ughwhatname » Wed Oct 17, 2012 7:48 am

When I got my equipment, I wondered if my dog would have any reaction. She's not chewer, so I wasn't concerned about that, but I wondered if she would be afraid of it (like the vacuum cleaner!)

Last night (night 6) and she hasn't shown any interest until.... at 5:00 a.m. this morning, she wanted to go out. She has a bell to ring on the off chance she needs to go out during the night, but she didn't ring it. I had heard her run to the back door and I was listening for it. Instead, she ran back into the room, jumped on the bed right in front of me, LICKED my headgear and ran off! So funny.

i'd say don't encourage them to like it or intentionally blow the air at them or something like that. if you do it could turn into a play toy. just act as if it don't exist. my wife and i both have cpap's and the dogs sleep with us. the apparatus don't bother them, they still try to take their half of the bed out of the middle.

Rudder (in my avatar) is generally a scaredy-Newf who runs from the vacuum, but he hasn't really paid any attention to my gear. Last night I let him sniff the mask and the hose, and he seemed to be thinking, "we'll, okaaaaaay, I s'pose..." I'm glad it's not an issue.

He is not a big chewer, but I agree that the equipment should stay away from dogs who are- it has your smell, after all, and some dogs go for that big-time (shoes, unmentionables, etc).

I agree with both of you. I have not even introduced the equipment to her at all. She does sleep in bed with me, and maybe her sleeping quality will improve now that I'm not snoring all night! No wonder she just sleeps all day... nah, its because she's a lazy dog.

I am very fortunate that she is not a chewer at all. Not even her own toys. I don't believe she was interested in the equipment as much as she was trying to lick my face to inform me of her need to go out, like now.

And what is it about taking the middle of the bed? By my dog's placement of herself, she ends up with 3/4 of the queen-sized bed, and she's only 20# herself!

I have a Lhasa Apso and a Chihuahua who both have bed privileges and neither pay any attention to the machine or mask. Neither are fond of the vacuum cleaner though.

I just got my equipment two nights ago and was concerned how my cats were going to react. But no worries, after the first night, they were sleeping in our bed again, the oldest, Kitty, right up inbetween my husband and me, and the youngest, Peanut down at my legs. Seemed to show no interest at all in what was going on which I am so thankful for!

Tommy, our long-haired Chihuahua, loves getting his fur vacuumed.
He is not allowed in the bedroom, but on the rare occasion he has gotten in there, he just wants to sleep on the bed.
He hasn't touched a thing--(knock on wood)

My dog doesn't sleep on the bed, so she is not even aware of it. My cats on the other hand, The redhead (aka my sleep apnea service cat ) marks my mask and head gear by nuzzling it each night. The tiny dictator gave it a good sniff over when I 1st got it and if I change anything she has to check it out first. She will occassionally bat at the end of my hose, I hang it over my head board in morning. Other than that they are not interested in it.

I will admit, I chose my mask based in part upon the diffuser for the exhale, because the redhead likes to snuggle under my chin and the first mask I had the exhale was so strong, she was getting blasted by air and couldn't sleep there.

Our dog is not supposed to be in the bedroom but sometimes my husband goes out while I'm still in bed in the morning and forgets to close the door.

The dog came over to my side of the bed and her usual greeting when she comes in is to put her front paws (and heavy body!) on me so I can give her a good ear scratching. She came over as usual, saw and heard my mask and did a classic doggy double take with the tilted head, as if saying "huh?". THEN she jumped on me as usual. I was lying on my side and it's kind of hard to shift positions with the mask on AND a 70 lb dog on you. Especially while laughing in the mask.

All I can say is be careful about the cats. I have had a kitty for over a month now and up until about a week ago, she didn't bother at all with my equipment until I woke up to an abnormal leaking noise only to find about a dozen pin type holes throughout my hose. The cat has since lost bedroom privileges. And I've added a "Hose Snuggle" to the main hose but still don't trust letting her back in the bedroom after what happened.

My chihuahuas/toy fox terriers on the other hand could care less and have never bothered my equipment and I think they get annoyed by the vent of the mask as they don't try to cuddle up near my head anymore.

I have to be so careful with my mask as our kitty Teddy loves to chew on anything made from silicone (like the seals on my mask). My husband is in the plastics business and had a large bag full of various silicone sample parts that Teddy got into and he destroyed the lot. I usually wash my mask out every second day and leave it to dry on a towel on the bathroom counter. I try to keep Teddy out of the bathroom until it's dry and I can put it safely away in a drawer. It could get to be a very expensive chew toy!

my dog freckles, that is beagle & rat terrier ate everything when she was a puppy. album covers, shoe tabs, carpet corners, electric blanket power cord, wallpaper on the wall, etc. the one that got me in trouble was a sheet. my wife had bought new sheets for the bed. i was clowning around and stuck a treat under the sheets thinking she would go in by the pillows and crawl under looking for it, sorta hide and seek. i wasn't watching close and she ate a big hole right thru a new 600 count sheet to get the treat. i might still be in trouble for that. LOL.....

My Dad's cat has put many holes in his hose, so you have to watch for that if you have cats.

My cat isn't interested in it at all. She occasionally sleeps in the bed. I do hang the mask up out of her reach during the day, though.

My dog is equally uninterested, but she has learned that when I put the mask on, it is sleep time. She could be wagging her tail, playing with a toy, but the second she sees the mask on my face, she lays down.

My dog goes to a doggie daycare while I am at work and when we are home she wont go in another room without my boyfriend or myself, so I don't worry too much about the equipment and the dog.

Taco puppy has figured out she can nudge my hose and wake me up. The hose in my setup is within her reach.

I didn't encourage it in any way, she just figured it out on her own. It's not a problem, though, and actually works fairly well.

Ughwhatname, what kind of bell is this and how'd you teach her to ring it?

My 'other' cat Ecco (felis) comes into the bedroom when he wants his breakfast, goes straight to the machine and steps on the 'Off' button... charming way to wake up I must say! But he's kind of a cat genius at everything, so learning that took about 2 days and that was the end of my sleeping in.
