The SmartStart on my ResMed S9 Auto Set is enabled. The air starts blowing when I put the mask on. The problem is that when I take the mask off in the middle of the night (which sometimes happens), the airflow does not stop. In a sleepy stupor I usually end up holding the On/Off button down for about 3 seconds to get the machine to turn off.
The thing is, I know the "auto-off" function works because last night I was trying to just let some air blow through it to get water droplets out of the tubing, and when I tried to do that it kept shutting itself off after 30 seconds (presumably because I didn't have the mask on). I went in and turned off the SmartStart to let it flow without the mask on. I enabled the SmartStart after that, and yet I'm still having the issue of it not turning off once the mask is removed. Last night we had the space heater on so (due to the sound of the heater) I didn't realize that the machine never turned off and I don't even know how many hours it was just running-- I didnt notice it was running till I woke up this morning.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why it might be doing this?

Re: SmartStart Not Working Properly
ResMed machines continue to blow at a very low level after the initial "off" decrease from therapy pressures. This is by design so that any moisture in the hose will dry out. Is this low level air movement what you are feeling and think the machine needs to be totally off or is your machine continuing to blow at therapy level pressures?
If it is the continued low level air movement....that stops after 30 or 60 minutes...I forget which.

What is your pressure? I think it has to be above 7cm.
I had that problem, but when I finally got it to work, I didn't like the auto off, because I would take the mask off and not hear the machine blowing.

Re: SmartStart Not Working Properly
My pressure is low to begin with (4-10 range), so it's possible that the pressure isn't high enough when it happens. I can't tell if it's just blowing low levels of air or if it's therapy pressure or not-- all I know is that it's loud and it annoys me so I turn the thing off manually (so I also don't ever know how long it's running like that because I almost always turn it off right after I take it off and I hear it blowing). This morning when I woke up it was still blowing but I dont know what time I took it off so it's possible that I hadn't had it off for more than 15 minutes or so, it's hard to say. The noise didn't bother me this time because the space heater noise covered it.
Next time I take it off and am aware of the sound I will try to let it go for 30 minutes to an hour and see if it shuts down then. Thanks guys!

I let the auto on turn my machine on, but I turn it off manually because the 30 seconds to a minute
it takes for it to shut off automatically arouses the bullfrog. (I mean it wakes him up)
