Upcoming surgery

Post by cybergoon » Wed Oct 03, 2012 3:25 pm

I am going to go through with the UPPP, Tonsillectomy, Turbinate Reduction and Septoplasty in a few weeks. I have read all of the horror stories, so I am not looking for anyone to try and talk me into or out of having this procedure. I have consulted with more than one ENT, as well as my family doctor. Of course, I am a bit nervous about it, but think I will be better off in the long run. My tonsils are HUGE and most definitely need to come out. My septum is deviated about 85% on one side and 95$ on the other side, so definitely need this taken care of. I am not under the false impression that the UPPP is going to get me off of xPAP. I know there is a small chance that it will, but I'm not counting on it.

I am just curious how long people are usually down after this type of procedure. I'm a 41 year old male and I know it is difficult for adults to have done. The ENT says I will be given two weeks off of work. I'm just wondering if that is what most people needed, or if that is a "best case" scenario.

Also, I just noticed that ResScan 4.1 is out. I haven't been able to find a link to download it, so if someone wants to hook me up, please PM me. I have 3.16 right now and it is SOOOOO slow.

I'm looking to have my surgery on 10/30/12. I will try and get back and post updates about my progress.

Thanks!

You sound like you've done a fair amount of research.
Some of the quicker recovery times may be due to newer procedures.
I hope you have the BEST surgeon lined up.

I missed 4 days of work including the day of surgery. There was a weekend in there too so total time off was 6 days. I didn't feel like talking very much for few more days. I was concerned that I would run out of liquid Percocet but the pain eased off in time.

There were some interesting side effects. The antibiotics kill the good bacteria in the gut, so look forward to the hersheys. Eat lots of yogurt. Then the constipation sets in from the opiates. There was a mild itch that also developed related to the opiates as well. I seemed to develop a tolerance for it before the drugs ran out.

Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. Wow...6days??? I think your pain threshold is probably much higher than mine. Still waiting for approval from the insurance company...

Best wishes. Keep us posted.

Especially if it goes bad so we can gloat.

Just kidding, I hope it works well for you. I look forward to the day when we all can get some sort of simple surgery that cures apnea.

One of my ex's had the tonsils done. Yes he needed the full 2 weeks to recover.

Hi Cybergoon,

Please keep us posted as I am having a tonsillectomy and soft palate reduction on November 7th. My ENT said I would need about 10 days for recovery as you have a sore throat. I had the turbinate reduction done earlier this year and it wasn't too bad. I have already started buying broths, juices, and anything I might need. For your nose make sure you go and buy Ocean Saline spray as you will need to use it several times a day to keep your sinuses and nose moist. If it is moist it makes the healing process go much quicker. You won't be able to blow your nose or anything like that for about 2 weeks and when you go back in they use a suction to clean everything out. Without the saline spray it will be very uncomfortable. Good luck!

I had a bad nosebleed that landed me in the emergency room. They cauterized it, and put in packing, which I assume is similar to what they will do post surgery for you. Just a warning, it is crazy-making. I found I wasn't really in much pain, but needed the meds to keep me sleeping and not aware how distracting the packing really made me.

Just a heads-up. Even if you are not in so much pain, you may still need the meds (and I'm anti-meds saying this).

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Well, surgery is complete. Just got home from the hospital today. The surgery went fine, but when they tried to extubate me, my vocal chords clamped shut, causing a nasty pulmonary edema. The doctor said they didn't have me restrained and that I was tossing nurses around like rag dolls. Said he has never seen someone that was still "under" in that much of a fury. So, I spent two nights in ICU and two nights under observation. Things went pretty well. I first couldn't sleep because I didn't have my CPAP machine, but eventually I wore out and slept for a while. They said my o2 sats were dropping into the mid-nineties, which is great as at my last sleep study, I was dropping into the upper fifties.

To be honest, I thought the pain would be much worse. I guess maybe I was just well prepared. Don't get me wrong, it does hurt. Swallowing is a real pain. Worse than the pain is everything I try to swallow tries coming out of my nose. It is getting better already though. I'm actually thinking I may go back to work on Monday instead of doing the short term disability thing.

I had turbinate reduction (worked perfect for about 8 months, now I still have much better airflow through my nose, but I would say around 20-30% less than I had for those 8 months). Septoplasty... I had this too, along with small UPPP and uvula removal using RF knive. Didn't help at all, I had hemorrhage... It was terrible! My breathing was better for less than 6 months, now I am still having collapsible soft palate.

Decision about having tonsillectomy may be good, I can recommend turbinate reduction too, but remember that it would be very hard to use CPAP after UPPP (I had small amount of tissue removed and I have problems). I hope you won't need it. You should also consider the fact that you can have obstruction behind your tongue, and surgeries you are about to have do nothing to that. I hope that you had cephalometric x-ray done and you know whether you have this problem. You may also need MAD after the surgery to rid of your apnea. I wish you luck and quick recovery, keep us posted here.
