Thought this link was very informative. Since I've been told my renal function is lower than normal for my age for the past 8 years or so, I was doing a little searching and came upon this slideshow which points out a lot even further than renal impairment - much of what we already know but presented pretty straight forward.

I wonder about it's validity....it started with the statement that "The major cause of OSA is Obesity"

Sorry, I admittedly missed that part. I just thought the slideshow itself was rather unique and informative over all.LSAT wrote:I wonder about it's validity....it started with the statement that "The major cause of OSA is Obesity"

Aloha, Good article which I can relate to as I have End Stage Renal Failure and having been diagnosed with sleep apnea 2 months ago which is another health problem that I must face. One of the important things to remember is if you have declining functions in your kidney to really get on it and find a good kidney specialist, because once it's gone it's to late. I've been on Peritoneal Dialysis now going on 2 years and it's been one thing after another which makes me realize how important the kidney is for living. The good part is that there is forums like this that one can turn to for information.

Yup. Due to untreated central sleep apnea (I could not get doctors to pay attention to it), I had unmanageable hypertension. That led to HORRIBLE headaches in the morning. The only thing that would put a dent in them was Ibuprofen. Unfortunately there is NO warning on Ibuprofen or other NSAIDs that combined with hypertension they cause kidney damage. Bummer. I now have Chronic Kidney Disease. I am doing everything I can to slow the progression. The reason I try to help folks here is that I don't want to see anyone else hurt by similar circumstances. Too many doctors can be flip about paying attention to complaints from their doctors. Unfortunately, poor listening skills can lead to serious health consequences.

Excellent slide presentation, thanks for posting link.
I breezed through them, and I'll have to look at slide 21 again, because it didn't seem right at my cursory glance.
The statement that most OSA is caused by obesity is, I believe, correct. (And, I say this as an apnea patient of normal weight). The estimates vary, but I recall something like 20-25 percent of the sleeping disorder is caused by airway plumbing and/or neuro issues in the non-calorically gifted.
I thought the slides that showed the effectiveness of xpap in improving blood pressure and nocturnal dipping were instructive, and should be read by any hypertensive who considers giving up on the xpap.

BINGO! That was also my case as a couple previous back injuries / work-related - had me on high doses of Ibuprofen (600mg) multiple times daily if I remember correctly. My PCP quickly spotted this as a concern in later years and I am now no longer allowed to take anything like Advil, Ibuprofen, Alive, ect... It's Tylenol only and maybe aspirin. But anyhoo, I found it also interesting that the condition of untreated sleep apnea could possibly have some more negative bearing on one's kidney's as and in itself so I am hopeful at the stage mine is at, this can be reduced so I don't need dialysis for quite some time. Otherwise, my health has been improving, cholesterol levels down and I went from two statins down to one since APAP. Kidney function hasn't been retested as of yet post-APAP.JohnBFisher wrote:.....The only thing that would put a dent in them was Ibuprofen.
