System One Resistance with Aloha Nasal Pillow

Post by jacoby75 » Fri Aug 24, 2012 5:01 pm

Hi guys,

I have a Respironics System One 560 (heated tubing, etc.). I recently picked up an Aloha Nasal Pillow, and love it. But I have a question. The System One has the option of setting a resistance based on the Respironics mask you're using. The Respironics masks all have that resistance setting labeled on them. However, when using a non-Phillips mask, of course there is no resistance labeled.

I was curious if anyone has used this combination, and done any research as to what an appropriate resistance setting would be.

Thanks

Rick

Respironics says for non Respironics masks just set it to 0 which effectively turns it off. Won't hurt anything. Doesn't affect the leak report numbers like the mask selection on ResMed machines does.
Or you could use whatever resistance setting goes with one of the Respironics nasal pillow masks. It will be close enough. It isn't a critical issue one way or the other.

Yeah, I figured I could just disable it if need be, but I didn't know if I'd get better performance from using it. I don't have a respironics pillow to see what the resistance would be, though. Thanks.

This is one of the reasons I -love- this forum! I have the same system, and have ordered the same mask (if only my Dr's office would reply to Cpap.com and fax over my prescription -- grr) and had the same question! It is like the hive-mind of the forum is thinking ahead for me!

Here is a guide for the settings that go with the Respironics masks. I apologize for the quality but it is a picture of a picture of a picture.

You can read up on Resistance control here

I have a PR S1 machine. I did experiment with the various settings and pretty much found out that I couldn't tell any difference on how it felt nor on leak numbers reported.
I think it might be a useful tool at higher pressures maybe when masks (especially full face masks) tend to leak more.
Mostly IMHO..I think it is hype. It isn't going to make or break the therapy.
If a certain setting feels good though..hey anything that makes things feel better is good for the overall therapy because it lets us maybe rest better.

Once again, Pugsy pulls through! : ) You're my hero. Thanks. Who knows if it will actually make a discernable difference, but I thought it would be worth a shot. Thanks so much for always taking the time to help out.
