Not feeling the air from the mask when I wake up

Post by jjlady » Sat Aug 18, 2012 5:30 pm

I have noticed after waking up with the mask on, I feel I can barely perceive the sensation of the air flowing (or my breathing) from the hose unless I take deep breaths. I have sometimes thought that maybe I wasn't breathing (from apneas, or very shallow breathing?) and that is why I can't feel the air.

My data still shows of a lot of events throughout the night, but all my doc wants to work on right now is just sleeping 7 hours and not laying in bed unless I am sleeping (for 2 more weeks).

When I first put the mask on for the night, I am very aware of the in/out of my breathing. I wonder if it is my brain just getting used to hours of breathing that way? I have been on the hose for about 2 weeks.

After just three months I do not feel the air coming in either.

Sometimes I break the seal on my mask to make sure all is well -- and when I do it always shows me that yes I am getting air.

This is what is happening. Even after 3 years I get the same thing. What feels like a hurricane when I first put the mask on is reduced to a gentle breeze in the morning when I wake up. Our body and our brain gets adjusted to the pressure during the night and it becomes "normal" to have the "hurricane" blowing so we simply don't notice it.

Give the brain a constant sensation - it begins to filter it out, with time the filter gets better and better, after 10 months - I hardly notice after 5 minutes.

This is similar to the theory behind how a TENS unit or a neural stimulator works to reduce or control pain.

Open your mouth and the air will come rushing out. My kids think its crazy funny. I think it's useful to check there is actually air as most times I can't feel it.
