Rainout in Climateline tube :(

Post by silentsinger21 » Sun Aug 12, 2012 6:42 am

Hey everyone this is like the first time it happened since I got my tube more than a month ago, I wore my mask with the climateline and as soon as I turned the machine I feel water splashing in my nose. I didn't bother to check the tube, than went to sleep... I kept waking up because water is always splashing on my nose like crazy. Anyway, my setting for the tube is on auto, so all I do is adjust the temperture and that is it, but could there be something wrong with my tube? how can I fix it other than calling my DME and reporting this.

Unhook it and shake it out ...

Is your machine lower than your head?

How full was your humidifier?

My machine is actually lower than my bed (the table is just about 2-3 inches shorter.
My humidifier is always at at the "Max" line, I don't dare go over that haha.
I did unhook it and shake it but it keeps splashing.

You likely had a bit too much water in the tank. I have done this myself.
The air blowing over the too full tank will blow water into the hose and up to your face.
When this happens immediately when you turn the mask on there is no time for condensation to develop.
The culprit is too much water in the tank and the only solution is to get up and pour some of the water out and shake your hose out as best you can and also the mask. It doesn't take but a tiny bit to be annoying so the hose and mask has to be shaken really well.

ResMed tanks are kind of hard to see exactly where the max line is and it only takes a tiny bit to make this mistake.
I have done it a couple of times. The hole exiting the tank to the hose is real close to the max line.
I try to fill just tiny bit below max line.

Good tip... I do hate how you can't really read the line since the tank is so difficult to see, I'll try my best to remember that next time... I just hate to have to wake up thinking I got ice cold water thrown at me, although in the area I live it would probably feel really good .

I believe you can create rainout if you override the settings by changing the machine to manual where you have control of both the humidity level and the temperature.

If I take the water container out in the morning and fill it a little while later, it is very clear and you can see the line. If I leave it in and do it just before bed I can hardly see the line.

That max line is so hard to see. I wish they had put something on the outside of the tank for reference.
Or I wish they had done the top placement of the exit hole to hose like the PR S1 machines.
But they didn't and we just deal with it.

I have done it twice. The first time I did it and it was such a shower I thought "What the heck"...then I realize what I had done. Even with my preferred high humidity settings I don't use all the water each night so I just compromised and fill it a bit less than max.

STL Mark I have my settings to manual and I use higher humidity settings and I don't get rain out even with low temp and high humidity settings.
The only times that I have had this happen with the S9 Climateline is directly from over filling the tank.
It happens immediately when you turn the machine on and there has been no time for condensation to develop and the amount of water, while probably not huge, feels like it is huge. It's real quick like....take 3 breaths and get a shower.

That's why I tend to "warm up" my humidifier before I turn it on so that way it gets it chance to condensate

I guess I'm the exception to the rule cause I have no trouble seeing the max line. I take my tank out every morning and take it to the kitchen along with my nasal pillow to be washed. It's easy to see if you have the tank out. I set the tank next to the machine and put it in the humidifier when I go to bed.

The S9 humidifier tank design could definitely use some improvement. It is very easy to overfill the tank because (1) the condensate on the side of the tank can easily cloud visibility of the fill gauge, and because (2) the max line of the fill gauge comes right up to the humidifier air outlet.

To avoid humidifier water gettting into the hose, I do two things: (1) I keep the hose elevated immediately from where it connects to the air outlet so that there is no sag in the hose where water could collect. (2) I no longer top off the humidifier water level to the max line. Even with this last precaution, I still have plenty of water left in the humidifier to get me through the night.

Also, after dealing with foggy condensate on sides of the humidifier tank a few times, I learned to take the tank out and to quickly tilt it back so that the water in the tank would collect the condensate and allow me to read the fill gauge. Hopefully ResMed will improve the design of their humidier tank when they come out with the S10.

My tank always fogs over, so I remove it and tip it toward me until the water still inside
washes the dew off the front wall of the tank, I then add water and replace the tank.
This might be messy with the non-washable tank--good to have a towel handy.

Just let it sit out for awhile before you fill it and the fog goes away, you don't need it till you go to bed that night.

I thought it was just me! I have a really hard time judging where the water is in relation to the fill line. I did the overfill thing once. It freaked me out at first then I realized what was going on. Unfortunately, I was stupid enough to put the end of the hose on the bed when I took the tank out to drain out some of the water. When I cam back the bed was all wet! Ugh.
