Always tired

Post by giantred » Thu Jul 12, 2012 1:46 pm

I've been using my autoadjusting CPAP machine for a while now. And I've noticed that I am constanly waking up tired and feel tired during the day. The machine seems to be working, but I am so tired. It's like my head feels heavy, pounding and the eyes feel so heavy as well. Any suggestions?

What I mean by working is that I keep it on all night long, so I am sleeping. Might wake up once or twice but fall back asleep within seconds. But I"m always tired.

How long have you been on CPAP? What do you mean when you say the machine seems to be working -- do you have a way to look at the data from your SmartCard? If so, what does your AHI look like most nights? I'm still pretty new here, but there are some great knowledgeable folks who can and will help you if you can provide more information about what's actually going on.

Have you been waking up tired the whole time you've been on CPAP? I'm learning that you can have a good AHI with apnea well controlled but still have poor respiratory patterns (not meeting criteria for apnea/hypopnea events) that cause frequent arousals and leave you feeling tired all the time. Again, if you can provide more information from your machine's data card, people will likely have some helpful thoughts and suggestions . Best wishes.

By "a while" how long do you mean? A few days? a few weeks? A few months? A few years?

I ask because the equipment you show in your signature is the Legacy generation of the Respironics REMstar APAP, which is a very old machine. It was replaced by the M-series several years ago and the M-series was replaced by the current System One REMstars two or three years ago. And I strongly suspect you've chosen the wrong machine for your signature. Please click here for my Newbie's Guide to the REMstar machines to help you find the correct model for you APAP.

Once we know for sure which machine you have, we'll be better able to offer reasonable suggestions

Unfortunately another one who comes with many issues both physical and otherwise, apparently does not try anything advised and eventually goes away for a while... I see no point in trying again .

Ditto to what Julie and BlackSpinner has said.
Read his prior posts. Some people just can't/won't accept help, sort of like sleepwithapnea17 dude.
I already tried with this guy and still have the headache from banging my head on the computer.
Perhaps someone else with more patience can get through....or maybe they have a bigger 2X4.

If your consistent use of the machine is long standing, and if your data confirms your treatment is doing what it is designed to do, there may be other contributors to your tiredness. What things has your doctor already investigated? Here's just a few things that can have tiredness as a symptom...

Medication side effect
Diabetes
Thyroid dysfunction
Anemia
Cardiac related
Mood disorders
Limb movement disorders
Nutritional deficiencies
Inactivity

Hopefully you've resolved some of your prior issues with using CPAP. Since you are using it, I would assume so. That's a step in the right direction, but let us know where you stand on the specifics of your treatment. Just guessing, but I'd say optimizing your treatment may still need to happen, as well as work with your doctor(s) to address other possible causes. I have no way of knowing if your lack of follow through in past encounters here is due to being overwhelmed, general attitude towards life, or if something else is going on. Unfortunately, you do have a reputation to live down. How you go on from here will determine how much time people are willing to invest to help you work through this. If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, let's go forward from here and take definitive steps to improve things.
