Mother of newly diagnosed teen - needs software advice

Post by Cat's mom » Mon Jul 09, 2012 12:47 pm

Hey all,

My 16 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with severe/moderate apnea. Neither her tonsils nor adnoids are swollen, so surgery is off the table and she started CPAP about a week ago with (what I believe is) a Philips Respironics RemStar System one with A-Flex. She's got a standard size ResMed Mirage for her facemask. (She's got a small face and we think it's too big for her - DME is sending out a petite size.) Of course, she HATES the whole thing, but is a good and reasonable child, so she's been wearing it.

She wakes up in the morning complaining of not sleeping well, and of leaks, and it would be really helpful to me to have the machine's info on what was going on all night, so I can help figure out what can be done to make things work better. I looked at the Encore Viewer software, and it seems it won't work on 64 bit systems. (What? WHY?????)
So what options do I have? I saw some posts where people were requesting a PM with a link to Encore Pro, is that still available? If not, does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance, and I'd also like to say this is a great forum, as I've been lurking for awhile, and have gotten a lot of useful info already.

Heather

Welcome to the forum.
Check your private message box for some information on getting the software you requested.
Let me know if you have any questions or need anything.
The equipment you have chosen points to the Model 550 and SleepyHead will work with it.
If you look at the bottom of the machine and see model 560 then you have a 60 series machine (different selection of same machine in the equipment list) and right now only Encore products work with it but SleepyHead will eventually be updated to work with the 60 series machine.

There is no such thing as "standard size" mask. Have them bring a selection of masks or go there with the machine and a pillow. Put the mask on and turn on the machine and lay down in her favourite sleeping position to check for leaks. Masks are like shoes in which you plan to run a marathon, they must fit right and be comfortable.
Also get mask liners and strap padding from PadCheek. At 16 she needs to protect her skin and she has enough issues without getting strap marks and breakouts.

Tell her from me that using a cpap machine made me look much better, made my hair thicker and my skin softer. It also helps people maintain a good weight.

You can also think about trying nasal pillows. You have to replace the pillows every now and then to keep leaks at bay. Insurance covers the pillow replacements on a specific schedule. If you have been lurking you know everyone has a favorite (or 2). Here's one (of many) to try with 2 types of headgear

also let her know that it gets better with time. I'm at about the 2 month mark. I went through several masks to get one I like. It also took about 6 weeks until I could sleep 6-8 hours all at once. It clicks quickly for some...a little more time for others. Just don't give up.
