Getting used to it

Post by yellowdog » Wed Jul 04, 2012 6:42 pm

Newbie here. 2nd night using CPAP therapy. I definitely feel different on it but Im still finding myself getting very tired early on in my day. How long does it usually take to get used to the therapy? Obviously I know it varies by user and severity but I am just curious on any other recent newbies and thier responses to early therapy (first week or two).

Last night was my first day so we're in the same boat here. I did take a nap today, using the CPAP.

The answer is anywhere from a week to a year. First of all your brain has to trust the thing on your face won't kill you and you have stopped trying to kill yourself by not breathing, then you have to catch up on sleep (sleep debt) and then you have to start rebuilding the organs damaged by the lack of repair and lack of oxygen.

That happened to me for about the first 2 weeks. I would feel ok in the early morning and by 9am I just wanted to sleep. So if I could, I went back to bed and hosed up. I think my brain was just fiquring out that it was ok to sleep and we had a lot of catching up to do!

I started feeling better pretty quick. It took me about a week. I'm still struggling sometimes. I don't get a good seal and end up a little more tired during the day but nothing compared to how I was feeling in May before CPAP. Just hang in there.

It seems like it varies pretty widely. I'm into week 3 now and I'm still more tired than I was before CPAP, because pre-CPAP I never woke up (at least not consciously) and now I'm well aware of waking up at least once or twice a night. But the wake-ups are happening less, I'm getting to sleep more quickly, the mask is definitely a lot more comfortable, and I'm slowly figuring out how to rework my routine a bit to allow myself a little extra time in bed to accomodate the fact that I'm not getting unbroken sleep. I'm not noticing any changes to how I feel during the day, but I'm hanging in there. Hope you settle in quickly!

Second night for me. I usually get up to go to the bathroom 3-5 times a night. With CPAP I was only up once each night so am getting more sleep. Still going to be early so getting 9 hours of sleep. This morning was up just before the alarm at 5:15 am. Don't feel as foggy.

I've been on my Machine since Mid May and I started seeing results within the first week. The first things I noticed were less and then no bathroom breaks at night. Shortly after that I noticed that my usual pre-dinner naps were not occurring. Now I wake up fresh and ready to go. Some days are better than others but hey, that's life!

Keep the faith, you are ahead of the curve.
