Backing up my SD Card, A few questions

Post by mikewithe » Sun Jul 01, 2012 7:51 pm

After reading of the problems that some folks here are having/have had with corrupt data on their SD Cards, I would like to avoid the same.

The question though arises when I consider my prescription. When I first insert the SD card into the machine, I get a brief message of "reading data from card" followed by "SD inserted Prescription Accepted."

Now, I have read somewhere (I can't remember where) that the prescription is actually written to a non-accessible area of the card. If that's true doesn't that mean that I can't back up the prescription? And, again if true, is there a way around this so that the prescription and all data can be backed up?

I haven't read them all no doubt and I am certainly no expert but I am willing to bet most (if not ALL) of these problems are caused by improper handling such as forgetting to "eject" the card from the pc and/or removing the card while it is being written to by the pc or the machine.

That said it is always a good idea to have backups - even multiple copies.

I doubt the prescription is written in a secret area but will defer to the experts who will be along soon I am sure.

It is also a good idea to keep a notebook and to write all of your settings in there. Then write each change so you know (can remember) what was changed when & why. Keep a daily log.

my problem with the sd card was physical. the electrical contacts all have plastic ridges between them. one of the plastic ridges between a couple of the contacts came loose and was hanging there. it was in the same computer built in reader that another card got stuck in. i managed to keep it in place and put it in a usb card reader and copy the card, so i could paste it on a new card. i still have the broken card but am afraid to use it because the plastic ridges are there for a reason and i don't want to take the chance of shorting out my cpap because i didn't replace the card. the sd card just slides in the usb card reader and doesn't snap in like the built in reader or the cpap. my suggestion to all of you is if your built in card reader is in any way questionable or tight/hard to work with, buy a cheap usb card reader and use it for sd cards.

if there is a boot section or something similar hidden on the card (doubtful), the person at the dme that puts the prescription in wouldn't know any more about it than you do. so i don't think there is anything hidden on the card. they could however make something a hidden file which you wouldn't see or be able to copy unless you configure your computer to show all hidden and system files. when you show all files, you are seeing all files. when i copied my entire cards and pasted them into folders i had no problems.
