Getting New Amara Full-Face Mask!

Post by Tean94 » Tue Jun 26, 2012 5:47 pm

My last mask was the Mirage Quattro, and I hated it!!! It was constantly leaking, dug into the bridge of my nose, and was just hard to sleep with. I swear I got less sleep with that mask than without my CPAP machine all together!

So I called my DME and she told me about a new mask that was just released by Respironics this month called the Amara. She told me that she got one in and I'm going in tomorrow to pick it up!

From what I've been reading it is supposed to give the Quattro a run for it's money. It's also supposed to be very lightweight, which I'm hoping will resolve my painful nose issues. My biggest worry is that it'll seal well and have less leaks than my Quattro.

I'll let y'all know how well it goes in a few days.

i don't like the idea of the forehead support which my quattro fx does not have, but i do like the idea that 4 different size cushions will fit in the same frame. now that a mask has come out with this feature, others may have to do likewise.

This concept has been out for atleast 6 years, however nobody seemed to catch on until recently.

Let's us know how you like it. I'm currently using the FX. I tried the Mirage Quattro but it left a pressure sore on my nose and caused my forehead to break out from the forehead pad. So I'm a little leary of those types of masks now.

Good luck with the Amara--(Multi-size; I wonder how many cushions it comes with.)
I suffered with the Mirage Quattro as my first full face mask (Rotten DME saw me coming)
Since my joyful experience with my sexy friend, élan, I am now inspired to lab-rat a fabric cushion for my Quattro. (the retaining ring makes this mask an obvious choice for a ratted cushion)
I will share details later.

I looked at the FX, but my DME said it is notorious for leaks, and sold me on the Quattro instead. Though I was always waking up with air either blowing into my eye, or out the bottom of my mask. Which would also wake up my wife.

I really hope this one works better.

As one who is ready to get a new mask due to also having problems with my quattro, I am anxious also to hear your report. I desperately want something that is lightweight and hope this one lives up to its reputation and is not hard to deal.

I will be picking up the new mask tomorrow after work. I am a side sleeper, which seems when my leaks most commonly occur. I expect to have a review soon.

So I tried on the medium Amara mask, but it was just too narrow for my mouth. My DME didn't have the large, and said that Resperonics won't be releasing it for a few more months. So I got the FX instead.

As for how the Amara felt... Very comfortable and much less pressure on my nose! My insurance will pay for a new mask every 3 month, so hopefully by then my DME will have the Amara in large.

Thanks Tean.

I am perplexed as I thought that the mask comes with all the size cushions.

Glad to hear it is comfortable and doesn't have as much pressure on the nose.

From the advertising:
"The Amara Full Face Mask is coming soon in four sizes -- petite, small, medium and large -- all of which will fit onto the same frame."
No it doesn't mention if it comes with more than one size, but it's odd your DME couldn't get the large cushion.
Maybe it's just a preview, and they want to show it around.--"Sorry we can't get a small (medium, large, petite) until later."

Chunky Frog,

It looks like there is one size basic frame that comes with the different size cushions. Kind of like hybrid innomed mask that has a one size frame with different size cushions for the mouth portion.

I have decided this is the next mask I am going to try since it looks so light. It also seems like it is the least hassle free one as far as cleaning.

I had also considered the resmed liberty hybrid but it looks like it is royal pain in the neck to keep the pillows from leaking.

I hope to god this mask can be returned under some condition if I don't like it. I don't have insurance so I can't go to my local DME.

I believe all the Fisher & Paykel masks (at least the 431, 432, and Forma) are single frame with interchangeable cushions.
I know for a fact the 431 is since I was given the Small, Med, and Large cushions in the box.
My Forma came with the Med and Large cushion in the box as well.
