OT: Mirena IUD and sleeping problems

Post by jen4700 » Mon Jun 18, 2012 5:14 pm

I had a Mirena IUD put in April 23. I've had several side effects (nausea, constant bleeding, leg swelling, palpitations) and I've decided to get it removed. Sleeping problems are NOT a listed side effect, although I've found anecdotal evidence on the internet that they can be related. The only reason I mention this here is because my CPAP treatment is going extremely well and my AHI numbers are below 1 every night. But I don't feel rested. My eyes are all puffy when I wake up. I've got fatigue during the day. Just wondered if anyone else has had similar problems with tiredness / fatigue / sleeping with Mirena.

You'll know whether it's the IUD when you get it removed.

With your bouquet of other symptoms, it might be plausible;
but you do realize nothing keeps you up all night like a little pooper.

Ha! Hopefully she'll consider another good contraceptive alternative.

NO MORE BABIES FOR ME!!! I'll be getting the non-medicated IUD.

I like the non-medicated vasectomy.

I've never had a problem with mine (15 months) and it was a much better option than the pills or hysterectomy he was offering as an alternative. My bestie loves her copper one after she hated the non-existent periods she had on the mirena.
Hormones are such a bitchy thing.
Good luck.

I went with the mirena WANTING non-existent periods. But bled for four weeks straight. Did your friend have any other issues?

Vasectomy would be great - but we just started dating!

Nope, she had no other issues other than actually wanting to have a monthly cycle. Control freak, much?!
I had the non-stop bleeding/spotting when I got the Depo shot. Went back on the pill after the first 3 month cycle was done.
That sucks you are going through that because I've completely forgotten I've got the darn thing. My SIL also used IUDs for 10 years with no problems and got pregnant very easily after each removal. Of course, she could be a fertile myrtle because she loves poppin' out those little buggers. She has 4 of them so far.

I'm quite new to both Mirena and CPAP (and to posting here - hello!), but I didn't find that the Mirena made any difference to my sleeping habits or energy level, and my partner didn't note that it made my snoring (pre-CPAP) any better or worse.

All my pre-Mirena reading and talking to friends seemed to indicate that people had wildly different responses, though, and I'm getting the impression CPAPs are the same way. So I hope the Mirena removal help your fatigue too, and you can get some rest!

If you use a non medicated IUD you also need to use backup birth control. It is not nearly as effective as hormonal birth control. I know off at least several pregnancies that occurred using those.
