Finding a DME--What questions to ask

Post by allenhm » Thu Jun 14, 2012 8:14 pm

I have a friend who has been on CPAP for 8 years, referring MD has left town, I'm thinking of referring him to my new sleep MD. But as far as a new DME for him, what questions should we ask of them....I'm still a newbie here w only 1 yr on therapy. I know he would want a data capable machine, etc. but like what questions like...I don't know, follow up with them, qualifications of their staff, what equipment they offer? He is on Medicare, US.

I would ask which brand machines they handle.
Are they willing to order a different brand machine if that is what you want/need?
What is their mask policy? Can you try them for so long and return them if they aren't working? How many can you try like that? (Some are more lenient than others).
Do they have someone on call for emergencies? Example if you have equipment failure will they lend you a machine while yours is getting fixed?

Mostly, get a list of all "in network" DMEs for your insurance. If the first one won't give you a good machine call up another and tell them, "if you'll dispense an S9 Autoset (or whatever you want), you get my business."

First have them read JanKnitz's blog What you need to know before you meet your dme.

They may also profit from reading my Advice for those newly diagnosed with OSA

For Medicare, the DME needs to be not only a provider, but a 'preferred' provider.
Ask them point blank if they 'accept assignment', meaning they MUST accept the Medicare allowed amount as full payment.
Your friend (or his supplement) will still have to cover 20%, but that beats unlimited upcharges.
