Ahh....that would be negative points..

For newbies....we often get stuff like the above "great site, hope to contribute often, wow amazing information",,,,etc.
from people who don't register and must get a thrill out of posting stuff just to see there name in print I guess.
Sometimes they even register. While obviously not spam in the sense of selling something it is considered garbage posting which does nothing but clutter up the forum pages. I call them "fly bys"....they come post some sort of idiotic comment and won't ever be back.

So we spam remove stuff like this. Newbies will get a spam removal button after 90 days membership on the forum.
Don't respond to stuff like this because it locks the thread into the archives. Leave it alone and someone with spam button will come along and remove it. When in doubt...don't respond and wait. No matter how tempting because when you do we can't remove it. Even if you delete your own comments...it seems to stay. We have tried.

I probably remove a dozen of these garbage postings as well as real spam each day and I know others do the same.
If it is garbage posting it is clutter on the forum and we don't like to leave it laying around.

I run other forums and by looking at our logs these are test postings by "SPAM bots" to confirm they can post into forums like this. They are worded benignly so they have a greater chance to stay for a while. Some Spam bots often come from the same IP address and return frequently. I think we've captured about 30,000 IP addresses used so far, which is probably about 10% of the Spam bot IP's that have come to our site. I would say on one of our more popular forums a good deal of traffic to that website is a constant barrage of SPAM bots, pounding away at our forums security, trying to find ways to log in and post. We also use phpBB, the same as here, but we modified the forums pages and security to block them fairly effectively.

Pugsy, I do know who they are (not personally of course... I mean in general)
I believe the admins can remove those silly threads.

Yes, admin should be able to remove the threads but this is a very loosely moderated thread and we don't have set "moderators" that police the threads daily for crap like the above spam. That is why we have the spam removal button.
The forum administrators don't spend a lot of time here and pretty much leave it up to us to keep things clean.

They have chosen this forum format and Johnny also prefers to allow posting without the need for registering (he has his reasons) so we live with it.

If you wouldn't respond to these 'silly' threads...any member with a spam button could delete it. Once you respond...the thread is locked in.

Anyway thanks for making that thread popular

This happens from time to time. Usually a newbie replies and causes the thread to stick even though the offending comment is out of sight. If one scrolls through the replies after clicking on the "reply to" button we can see the original post so while it is out of immediate sight..it is still there once someone has replied.

I use it as an opportunity to explain the spam button and stuff to newbies who might not know or understand what goes on when we get spammed.

I had a forum (actually I guess I still do) and as administrator there is always the "final" deletion available to forum owner administrator and I would use it. I have no idea what happens to posts that are spammed removed once we click on the button. The forum administrators may periodically review them and make a final "deletion" or they may forever sit in limbo.

The most obscene or senseless posts that I see are threads/posts after midnight. I delete them if someone hasn't already beat me to it.

For some it's hard to resist, commenting on on posts that contain nothing pertaining to this forum, many get carried with hearing their keyboard click, I supposed a few spend a lot of time talking into their bathroom mirror. We do get a lot of new people here, at the start they tend to think they have to comment on every post, where sometimes they would learn more by reading them. Jim

The ADMINs here have better things to do than deal with minor problems with this support forum, if things get out of hand they will become involved, it up to us members to try, to keep things as easy for them as we can, and also keep the clutter down so people that need info can find it. Once again my thanks to them for supporting Sleep Apnea info for our better health.

Yes you can get rid of them......just report each answer as spam...of course I would get the approval of each one that has answered just in case ...................They are never "locked" in, just report as spam and they are gone, but you have to spam each reply before they are all gone. If anyone wants to get rid of this thread...you have my permission to spam my reply .
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.
