Hard to get the provider to change masks?

Post by AlanMacNeill » Sun May 20, 2012 10:23 am

So according to the online system, I'm due to replace my mask and headgear this month. I know that, by default, they'll just ship me another of the one I have.

But I don't really *like* the one I have...I don't like air filled cushions, I want a gel filled one.

Can I just call the supply folks (Lincare...but the local office isn't too horrible) and make arrangements to get fitted for and get a new mask, or am I going to have to fight?

Hi, I had similar problems with my DME. My insurance is thru Medicare.

I ended up ordering masks from this Internet firm on a 30 days trial option. I checked more than 8 masks Full Face and Pillows and was not satisfied with any.

Those 30 days trials cost me as follows: about $25 for the option and about $12 for returning the mask via UPS, or $6 via the Post Office.

Currently I am back to my first nasal mask from 18 months ago.

With Apria I've been able to change mask. They did want a fitting, said it protected me, although they've never have had the mask I want in stock in local office.

If your on Medicare they just can't automatically ship you your supplies. According to Medicare they must make contact with you. If your not on Medicare just call them and tell them in no certain words do not ship anything to me automatically, I'll call when I need something. Call and tell them what you want.

You would think a good-fitting mask would be in their own best interests,
as return business is so much easier than having to always hustle new victims.

I think since they can't get three times the retail price on masks that they could care less about that repeat business unless they can get you in for a "fitting" and charge for that "service".

But the answer to the OP is yes, you can request a different mask unless your doctor specified a certain type or class of masks on your prescription. Get a copy of your prescription and check before playing games with the DME.

My Sleep Doc usually suggests on the Sleep Report and the Rx the type of mask that I used during the Sleep Study. So it is followed by my the DME automatically especially during my first visit. Yes, the DME charges Medicare three times the Internet costs of masks. And also tries to claim duplicates to see if Medigap will catch it. It's a filthy business.
