Unusual Question

Post by kayursula » Sat May 12, 2012 2:59 pm

Ok, I live in the Southwest desert. Now I was able to purchase a second machine and have placed it in the trunk of my car. Every summer I take two months off to travel. This year we are going to be staying in the southwest.

Now my question. Is it safe to keep this second machine in the trunk. The temps here can get up to 120. In a car trunk, it would be higher. I have the machine in their original boxes.

I bought this second unit in case something should happen to the first one and in case I need hoses or trays etc.

Any answers would be so appreciated.

I lived in Phoenix for a year, and southern Utah for several years. Trunk temperatures do not "reach" 120, they vastly exceed 120. I don't believe most of them would be safe, as the cases and other plastic parts can distort at the temperatures they would be exposed to.
5 of every 4 people have math deficiencies.

Why don't you pick up a max-min thermometer, either mechanical or digital, and try sticking it in a small cooler or other insulated box in your truck, and see what happens? You are probably safe to at least 90 degrees. Otherwise I'd do the same thing, only put your spare in a plastic bag, and use a blue ice pack in the cooler. I travel with sensitive equipment for my work, and that's how I do it.

I wouldn't leave it in the trunk all the time. There's a lot of wires and plastic in there that are not built for those kind of temps. As important (and expensive) as these machine are, I just wouldn't risk something getting damaged.

The car trunk will certainly get hot enough to deform the plastic parts, maybe even damage electronics components.
A cooler will only protect your gear for a few hours to a couple of days, depending on the cooler.
I would give it the same environment as you would your cosmetics, for example.
A safe temperature for lipstick would be harmless to any cpap gear.
Just keep it where you are comfortable yourself.
